I think the highest mine has ever goten was 1400* but that was for 2 or 3 seconds. I've held 1200* for quite sometime towing but that won't hurt anything

Whoa!!..so at what temp. does aluminum melt at?...Allot can, and probably will happen at temps like that...even at a few seconds...I don't got the $ to even try it....

i thought i read 1350 somewhere before. but in short brusts it shoudnt hurt.

IIRC 2nd GEN pistons will melt at sustained 1200 - 1300*. But we are not talking piston temps we are talking gas temps. Also not sustained!

It's not how hot you get...it's how long you stay hot!

CTD's have been hitting 1500 - 1800+* in a 1/4 mile for many years and driving home afterwards

1500-1800 here for a long time on numerous 1/4 mile runs and I have over 200,000 on the engine. Of course it doesn't get there until it's in high gear and marching on the big end. So it's probably seeing 1500+ for 3 seconds or less on a pass.

For those with concerns for EGT's.... worry about this! Cylinder head temps at combustion, in a diesel engine, can be well over 1700*
