How to get stock HX35 to spool up more quickly?

Truck is a 2001.5 6 spd with stock air box and true flow foam filter. I was curious as to what options there were to get stock turbo (hx35) to spool up more quickly. I have 4 inch exhaust and that coupled with the foam filter element seemed to help a decent amount, just curious if there were other things to try/think about to improve this some more. Seems a buddy's truck spools up very quickly. He has a uni filter plumbed like a BHAF and a Mad ECM. Didn't know if these were the reasons his spooled so quickly or if it had to do with his auto trans.

Thanks, Matt

It is the MAD ECM. The fueling map in those lends to quick spool up.

first off you are comparing an hx 35 with an hy so he does get a bit quicker just in the turbo but he is kicking your butt in the fueling and breathing, if you go with a mad ecm you too will see a big difference in spoolup

more fuel will get it to spool up quicker.....smaller turbine housing.....

ofcourse a bigger turbo will get the job done

I recently did the HTT exhaust manifold, I ported and polished it first, it made a huge difference in how quickly she spooled up

You could go down to a 3.5" DP, like the older Magnaflow systems....but that would lead to higher EGT's if you started pouring on the fuel....and if you towed. BUT the 3.5 is probably good to around 350-375 HP or so....from my point of view! The smaller pipe will keep the heat in the turbo and lend to better low end responsiveness with out excessive restriction.

I helped out Rjohnson with his new HTT Manifold with his new HX-55 a few weeks ago. He drove on the turbo without the manifold and with. He said there was a noticeable difference with the new HTT. Heck...im sure he will see this thread and chime in on Monday...just wait! haha....

You could try LOX injection into the exhaust manifold. It will help drastically with spoolup-- for a little while (about a nanosecond, hehe).
