Help!! 4" or 5" Exhaust??????
After my days fiasco, my exhaust system has taken a beating. It'll have to be replaced, so before it's repaired I need to make a decision. Do I stay with the current size of 4" or do I jump up to 5 inch. Is there a performance difference between 4" and 5"? Is there an advantage? Is there that much of a sound difference? I'll probably not run a muffler either way, just like now. What to do, what to do................
Hi JPR_Ram...
I have a 5" on my Dodge and my dad has a 4" on his Powerstroke... My exhaust is considerably deeper and a little meaner sounding than his is... as for flow, One would have to assume that the larger diameter exhaust is going to move more air out than a 4" but somone else might want to chime in as to if the incresed backpressure (if any) on a 4" would serve any benefit. I always understood diesels as "giant air pumps" Big air in... Big air out. So I would go with the 5" but that is JMO.
I got a great deal on my 5 inch kit from a guy who has an ebay store. I paid 375.00 for my complete 5" kit from the turbo back. This kit included everything; hardwre, instructions, and all. It has a 4" downpipe then goes to 5" all the way out. Has a muffler and included a muffler eliminator pipe if I ever want to cut the muffler out all together... sounds like you wouldnt want to put the muffler on yours as you already dont have one so it think it would sound mean...
PM me your email address and if you are interested when I get home tonight I can email you the contact info of the guy I bought mine from. He was hands down the best deal I found out there and the kit installed great... no problems except to be a little creative on the last hanger by the spare tire.

I agree with the above post. Not sure who the 5" was purchased from but I got mine off e-bay for $335 shipped with no muffler. The last hanger does take some doing, but nothing that cant be handled.
I would say 5 inch is kinda overkill unless you pumping out 600+ ponies...! But by the look of prices on ebay, you could basically get 5 inch for the price of 4 inch... Oh yeah, there is a little bit of sound defference. Your Call!

5", straight pipe, will drone badly and is loud, IMO.
5" not needed for performance till over 550 hp. Some report loss of HP with 5" at lower HP levels...but no personal experience.
Clearances on a 5" can be tight making install a lot trickier.
Got my 5" Diamond Eye from RIP at Source Automotive, with a flow through muffler, for about the same price mentioned above!

That's your call. But no one I know likes drone.
I would not have a 4" or a 5" without a muffler, since the latest flow through versions don't hurt performance! I don't like noise for the sake of noise. Been there and done that years ago.... but deeper tone from 5" is nice.
I prefer stealth type power...just to let you know where I'm coming from.
