Got me some gauges... now what?

pyro - tranny temp - boost, all in a spiffy pillar pod setup.

No specific directions in the box, where's the best places to locate each of the sensors with these, and are there any "tips" to make the install faster/better/cooler?

Judging from past responses - I bet there is already a FAQ or some spiffy page one of you is gonna refer me to... and that is fine by me

Try this http://www.dieseltrans.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=448 for putting the sender in the hot line out of the trans.

I put the sender in the trans pan on mine and that gives the bulk oil temperature going into the trans which then heats up substantially under heavy loads... Due to the cooling being done by the 2 trans coolers, actual trans temp could be 50 degrees higher than what the gauge says. It will give you adequate warning as long as you realize that.

Well, 85% done with the install.

Boost was easy as can be, Pyro was easy too - tapped in pre-turbo.

We did everything but run the positive lead for the tranny gauge, and the wire and sender for the tranny gauge.

I am a little disappointed with how the pillar pod works - especially how you have to cut up your stock one and use plastic trim brads to attach the pod one on top of the stock one. Just does not fit *right*, but I guess I will get used to it.

Still gotta pick up some green boots for the gauge bulbs, the plain ones are BRIGHT.

Tapped into the fuse panel to get my dimmable hot lead.

Where is a good place to get a switched positive source for the tranny gauge?

BTW - I got this entire kit (pod panel, gauges, and what-not) from an eBay auction, seller names "extremepsi". Reasonably priced - $255 shipped to my door and he ships fast.

DRM: Believe I have the same ones you have. Bought them off e-bay.

Dimed my trans temp light by using a black magic marker to coat the bulb. Worked well. You can also install an in-line resistor, but I'm not into electronics so can't advise on that one.

I have my sensor installed in the pan and the only way I can get the temp up to 140* is when the Torque Converter is not locked up (around town driving - stop and go). I have not pulled with it yet so that may make a difference. You may want to consider installing the sensor in-line as previously discussed for more accurate readings.

I tapped into the 10 amp radio fuse located in the dash fuse block. It is switched power when the key is on. It is the 4th fuse from the right, top row, on my 98.

lol - yeah, the tranny temp gauge is like a spotlight... even worse was that I mounted it up top and closest, so it shines REAL bright. I am gonna hunt for the green boots for the bulbs tomorrow, may still need to use your marker trick to tone it down some though.

I am VERY reluctant to fork over a lot of $$$ just to put the tranny sensor in the line, and I can have a pan sensor in place with minimal cost to me. What are those lines going for anyway? If $50 or less, I might just go for it.

Thanks for the tip on the power lead too

didgediesel4x4 - I have only had these thing in a few days, but they seem like quality gauges when you hold them, not light-weight rattle-prone units.

LongBlackRam - the gauge face says "HI" or "IH" or something like that on all of them. The Tranny sensor is Isspro. Buddy who helped me install them says they look JUST LIKE the Banks gauges he has installed on other trucks (he used to work at a 4x4 shop). This seems to run with what the selle claims in his eBay ad - so that is cool.

I can grab some pics of the installed units tomorrow in the daylight if some of you want more info

A couple of pics:

I added cheap green "boots" to the bulbs, gotta play with them some to get the brightness where I want.

Overall - happy

They're called bulb condoms, really.
Many auto parts and Radio Shack carry them.
