Got a Jake Brake.
Got a Jake Brake.
Got my truck back today. Looks like they did a good clean job installing the Jacobs E-Brake. I can't wait to test it out with the 5er in tow. I used it coming home from the dealer and it seems to really put the whoa! on the ponies! ;D
Now here's the straight skinny from the Driving Instructions as supplied in the kit. Quote: "To obtain the optimum braking performance from the Jacobs Exhaust Brake, it is necessary to keep the engine RPM as high as possible, but NOT TO EXCEED 3100 RPM.
Select a gear that will cause the engine to operate as near to 3100 RPM (but not over that speed) as driving conditions permit.
DO NOT OPERATE THE JACOBS EXHAUST BRAKE AT ENGINE SPEEDS ABOVE 3100 RPM."
Maybe this will answer some questions concerning E-Brakes, RPM, etc..

Re:Got a Jake Brake.
It has a slight rumble to it...nothing like a big rig though. When it's activated you can tell it's working not only by the truck slowing down, but by the sound of the engine also.
The brake is controlled by a rocker switch, which they mounted directly under the power point outlet to the right of the ash tray. It's not the most convenient spot, if you ask me, but it was installed according to the instruction manual. I have to lean forward in order to reach the switch. I believe a shifter mounted switch would be ideal.
Does anyone have their swich mounted to the shifter? (pic?) If so, what kind of switch did you use? I think some sort of push/pull switch would be good. Also, is there an adapter to go from the switch wire harness to another type of switch? Or would it simlpy be a matter of cutting the old wires and re-routing them? Thanks!

Re:Got a Jake Brake.
I installed the my jake brake and i put the switch next to the steering column. I didn't think too much of the directions putting it under the power point my self. But the wire leading from the cigerete ligter for the rocker switch light, you will have to make longer to go around the ash tray.Hope everything works out.

Do you have a picture of where you mounted your switch? Thanks.

Re:Got a Jake Brake.
Bd makes a shifter switch for there break, you can buy the switch seprate.
Just a thought, its not a jake brake. It's a jacobs engine exhaust brake!
A jake brake is mounted in your valve system. I was getting excited thinkin that jacobs may have came out with one for the 12v !
lol im not complaining just some info for u guys!

I agree, somewhat. It's not a Jake Brake like the big rigs. However, Jake being a nickname for Jacobs. And Jacobs being the manufacturer of the CTD exhaust brake, it's proper to refer to such as...Jake Brake. After all, Jacobs does. Jake is just a name reference...Jake doesn't refer to how or what it's installed on, or how it works. ;D

Go to the Member Photos section and look on page two under DIeseldude4x4's pics and hobbies. I bought a regular old two speed rear end switch from NAPA and tied it into the power to the solenoid wire. I can cut it on and off and never take my hand off the shifter stick. Works real well and makes people ask questions like " did you install a two speed rear in that thing?"

Re:Got a Jake Brake.
Has anybody out there ever tried usinga set of 220 cummins towers & selenoids ect or maybe a industrial mecerdees setup and machining some towers for converting it on to a 12v, youd play heck figuring out a valve cover that would clear a real jake; compression brake, but if somebody firgures it out and id be
inline with my inline for it.

What does a Jake brake on our trucks sound like or can't you even tell?
[/quote]
If my engine RPM is over 2,000 while decelerating the Jacob's E-brake will make the engine "rap" just like the real McCoy, and you can really feel it hold back. It does hiss when it's engaged. An exhaust brake is about 60% as efficient as a true engine brake. At lower RPM ranges, you'll hear more of the hissing noise.
I've got the NAPA generic axle shift switch mounted on the shift lever. It's part # PP6490. It doesn't come with a mounting bracket, I had to rig up my own.
The E-brake also helps warm up the engine faster after cold start-up, by idling with it engaged.
