Gauges: need some instructions
Gauges: need some instructions
I ordered my new gauges, (boost, EGT's and tranny temp) they should be here some time this week.
My question is where is the best place to install these? I have the pillar for the gauges, thats not the issue. what I'm worried about is where is the best place to tie into the tranny line, the exhaust and hook up the boost.........
The point of these things is to maintain optimum temps and pressures, I just want to make sure I'm getting the readings from the best available spots.
Also, what kind of numbers should I be looking for?
Thanks

Don't know about the tranny gauge. EGT is usually requiers a hole to be drilled and tapped in the intake manifold before the turbo. Do a search on this site and you will find exact dimensions. Boost gauge needs a hollow boost bolt that replaces one on the intake manifold. Then you attach the line there. I would highly recomend a fuel pressure gauge to keep an eye on your pressure going into the VP-44. Most important gauge on a 98.5 to 02.
Here's a photo of where I put my EGT gauge
Here's the boost bolt location
But I would seriously think about a FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE. as nkennedy says "number one gauge" you can't afford to NOT have one.

As mentioned the egt should go in the exhaust manifold. If you search on here you should be able to find very good directions as to placement and procedure.
The boost you can use a boost bolt probably one of the easiest ways or you can remove one of two plugs on the drivers side towards the rear of the engine (there are two one goes into the intake and one goes to a coolant passage so make sure it is the right one). This is a cheaper option as all you need is a couple dollar reducing bushing. IIRCC it is directly to the right and just above the fuel pump or the closest to the front of the two plugs.
The tranny temp I opted for the hotline coming from the converter. The older dodges (pre 98 I think) had a port for a temp gauge in that line and you can still buy that line and it is a direct replacement. Not the cheapest option. Or you can just splice a "T" into that line.
I also would suggest a fuel pressure gauge as being a needed gauge.

The truck is a '96 12V, so theres no VP44 on it. Sorry about that, my sig used to show up on every post. Dont know whats goin on with that........
Anyways, I'll probably look into fuel gauge a little later on, but I have a big move coming up (from Virginia to Washington state, I'm military on new orders) where I'll be towing my other truck and all my belongings, so EGT's and Tranny temp are a must before I leave.
BarryG thanks for the info on the built in port on the pre '98s, I'll have to check and see if mine has it still. I'll have to do a search on here and check on the bolt to remove to replace with the hollow boost bolt.
