gauges
gauges
I'm considering bombing. What gauges are the most important? Maybe the top three. What is the best way to bomb? Without spending 4 grand. I pull a 28ft 10,000 trailer and plow during the winter. I have a 4.10 rear-end automatic. Also will bombing help with mileage? Does any body use propane?
Re:gauges
There have been alot of discussions concerning guages and mods. Use the search function at the top of the page and search for guages. You will find more information than you could imagine.

The guages that you should have are pyro, boost, trans temp for your auto and fuel pressure.

As far as mods go, there are alot of ways to go. You need to fill out your profile so that we know what truck you have. I cannot speak for the "under-valved"
crowd, but for a "properly-valved" ;D engine, doing what you have mentioned, I would suggest some RV275 injectors or up to stage 2's and and Edge EZ or maybe a Comp or TST Powermax. You will have to do some mods to your auto as well with the replacement of torque converter and valve body at the least. I don't know much about the autos since I have a variable speed TC! ;D

Good luck and welcome to the site!

Re:gauges
What year of truck do you have? If it is one of those "overvalved" motors, I'd install pyro, fuel pressure, and trans temp gauges. If it is properly valved
, a pyro, boost and trans temp gauges.
John

Re:gauges
Confused yet? Don't blame you. Over-valved (24 valves, my personal preference). Under-valved (12 valves, another fine bunch of guys
) If you're a 24v, you MUST, MUST, MUST have a fuel pressure gauge. Absolutely imperative. Just do a search on lift pumps and you'll find out why. Second, EGT or pyro. Let's you know when you're running' hot and when to shut down your engine (350*). Third: Since you're an automatic, Tranny Temp gauge. Boost if you've got space. Welcome to the slippery slope.

Bombing' help with mileage? I think so. Also a little education about driving this beautiful beast has helped alot. I've done alot of bombing' in the last month (upgraded tranny, EZ and DDII's) and I've changed my driving habits abit and have seen my mpg improve by a couple of mpg. I'm pleased with the results so far. Next is a Scotty II. Get ahold of Wild Cat Diesel, one of our site sponsors, Rod will give you the straight scoop about gauges. He's a straight shooter and I'm hoping if I say enough kind words, he'll give me a discount on a Scotty II

Re:gauges
What fellow NW BOMBER member NW Dave said. Tranny temp may not be necessary if you put a MagHytec DD tranny pan on. Anyhow, do it right the first time and get a 3 gauge pillar mount. EGT, Boost and FP gauge. Also, I am agreeing with NWDave again. Timing/fueling box and bigger, more efficient injectors will improve mileage provided that you can keep your foot from mashing the go pedal. My mileage (3.54's) if keeping around 70mph on freeway, I can get 21-22 miles per gallon. But in your journey, after the gauges, address issue of drivetrain FIRST.

Roger
