Well after reading about all of the fuel pressure issues I installed a guage today. Westach electric using Genos billet cap. The gauge first pegged pressure so I reset the wiring and now I get nothing. Checked the circuits best I could(I am not good at wiring) and seems to me to be working. I can hear the lift pump try to prime and if I bump the starter it will do the full cycle. I also changed the filter when I installed the gauge. I guess I am off to shop to check the pump but I thought I would ask and see if there was something I was missing. Appreciate any help that can be provided.

You might try bumping the key a few times and let the lift pump run a few times to work out any possible air. I bumped mine 6 times after changing the pump so it won't hurt anything.

 

Clunk, thanks for the reply. I tried that lift pump cycled every time. I am hoping the gauge is not installed right but I cannot find any thing wrong with it. Is it possible for the lift pump to be out and still hear it cycling?

Pegging the gauge first try indicates to me something wasn't hooked up right and the gauge or sender was fried.

 

Found the problem, bad ground. My pressure readings are 12.5-14 at idle, 10-12 at cruise and 8-10 when I get on it. when I move the ignition to on the lift pump buzzes for a second and I get about a 2or 3 psi bump. If I do the starter bump it will cycle up to about 13-14. Does this sound right or am I starting to get a weak pump?

My idle reading is pretty much Rock-Solid @ 16 psi.
Does yours really vary that much?

 

Shovelhead, it is really not that varied, it's not jumping around. Just seems to hang in the ranges I posted. Have not seen it get to 16, If I idle for a minute or two it will settle in around 13 or 14. Easy driving will be around 12.5.

How new is your pump, mine is the original and has about 40000 on it.

Pump #1 died @ 37,000 miles
Pump #2 died @ 78,000 miles (replaced it about a month ago)

Pump number 2 never showed low pressure at Wide Open Throttle like you'd expect.
It would drop from 15 psi to 10 psi at idle, then as soon as I'd step on the Go-Fast pedal, the pressure would jump right back up.
I knew it was acting flakey, so I figured I'd change it now in the garage with all my tools available, than have to do it at midnight on the side of the road in the middle of No-where-sville in a thunderstorm with a rock and a stick.

 

Amen to the rock and stick comment, that is usually how it goes for me.

Funny I was noticing mine will drop about 2 PSI @ idle when the grid heater comes on... The gauge is mech. not electric sender.

Normally idle at 14.5 - 15.0

Just strange...
