I am going thru fuel filters about every 4000 miles. I do have a bad habit of letting the tank get real low. Could that be a cause of this. It lets me know because the truck stumbles acts like it wants to die, runs rough and sounds terrible. the idle gets erratic. Is this a symptom of dirty filter. It goes away when I change it. Hve had lift pump checked, and all was o.k.

The question I have is what is coming out of the filter?? It it is debris or water or substances unknown??? Regardless of what is there, it sounds like you have a lot of junk in your fuel tank and you need to remove your fuel tank and clean it.
The poor running is typical of a plugged fuel filter.
