Should this be a stainless steel washer or a high grade washer ? Any reccomendations ? I sure wouldn't want to encourage rust loose in my pump! does it get any oil flow in there ? Also to clarify the hole is 1/2" and the outside is 1" ? Also about stainless it seems they are usually a little thinner than most regular washers aren't they ? Maybe 2 SS washers will fit in .

Another option is to try metric washers, like a 10, 11, or 12mm. Those may fit better. Plus, I'll be finding out within the next couple weeks.

I see now, the washer fits inside of the larger spring and only increases the pressure on it. Thanks! I was thinking a washer that presses on the both of them.

This should work since that's case. Thanks

This seems like a great mod, and I will definitely try it this weekend. From what I remember reading, is'nt there 2 sets of gov springs in the pump? Do I need to add 1 washer to each set? Thanks

First mod I did is this, did this today.

Before I couldn't get past about 55-60 with my 3.55 gears, that was around 2300RPM IIRC. I made it a point to do this before I tow my little camp trailer next, as I had trouble not having RPMs last weekend in high winds and it annoyed me hitting hills at 55mph.

Couple things to note. I had to do it twice. The first time I went and bought some 12mm washers because all I had was 3/8". 12mm fit the diameter of the retainer perfectly. The problem I ran into was once I tried to put the keeper back in, it was REAL tight, and I had a hard time getting the nut in the same spot. Got it close as I could, knowing it wasn't going to work -- and as an first rate moron put it all back together. Truck stalled left and right.

Second time, I used those 3/8" with a hole drilled. Reason it worked: they were .025 thinner than the others. The first ones were .100, the 3/8" ones were .075" thick. Made a huge difference.

Truck runs like a raped ape in comparison! 1/3 throttle up hill and was accelorating nicely in 3rd up to about 70mph before I just cruised down so I didn't get pulled over in a 55mph zone.

Thanks for this idea, gunracer!

Mr GunRacer1,

did you ever figure out the 4k washer too? The last post I remember was that you're having stumbing around 3500. Just curious, trying to save a buck after robbing the 401k to pay for the new engine.

47RH problems after free GSK install

Last weekend I installed two washers .075 thick. Once I adjusted the idle the truck ran great. It idled fine, had much better throttle response and reved to 3200+. My problem is with my tranny. With od turned off and going through the gears when it shifts out of 2nd into 3rd the TC locks up immediately. If you have the pedal on the floor it shifts normally. Anything less and it just locks up as soon as it shifts into 3rd. The tranny shifted great before I put the washers in. I have adjusted the TV cable some each way and no change. Does anyone have any ideas?

So with all of the changing of washer sizes and such, am i correct in assuming that the gov. is a centrifical set-up? Assuming your using different size washers that may wiegh more or less?

It's a centrifical design, but doesn't work the way you're thinking. THe weight of the washers isn't what does it. The fly-weights are somewhere UNDER the springs... the ones that you're shimming with the washers. What this does is essentially increase the pressure against the flyweights of the governor, causing it to rev higher before it cuts the fuel back.

BTW, I'm starting to get used to driving mine. Had to pretty much give up on floating gears (hard to do when you're a truck driver). My wife got a laugh yesterday. We were running at 65MPH when I showed her how far I was pushing the throttle to make it run at that speed. I only had it pressed down about a 1/4 inch from idle! No dang wonder the thing's touchy when trying to float gears! If anyone figures out an adjustment on the throttle linkage to get some of that touchiness outta there, let me know.

The wife loved my truck before I did this mod, but now she LOVES it! Lettin the truck run up to 3K and shifting really makes that turbo scream through my 5" stack! Just need a bigger turbo and some sticks (after a clutch), and I'll be done w/ performance mods (I hope).

Hey GunRacer, has anyone tried the washer trick with 3000 or 4000 springs yet?
