fog lights
i have factory fog lights on my 99 and one just burnt out tonight. can i take them apart and put a replacement bulb in or do i have to buy a whole new set of fog lights? Andy
they come a part and theres a diff. bulb inside. if it was me id get the higher wattage bulbs for them. i remember a while back in this forum there was talk of a direct plug in replacement for the factory fogs. do a search on lights and it is on the first page under FYI higher wattage fog lights.
OH BTW the factory bulbs are 37.5 watts and those replacments are 50 watts...................mucho better

One of my fog lamps blew out on my 01 and the only replacement bulb that would work was the factory Dodge bulb. Every other aftermarket bulb would not light up. They were the same part number and everything. I tried 2 or 3 different manufacturers. In the end, I had to pay dodge $14 for a stupid light bulb.

You might have received bad information on this board like I did. Or at least information that didn't work for your particular vehicle. Here's what I did...
I went to AutoZone today with some information from a post I read on this discussion board and found out that something was wrong. I went in trying to get the 894 bulbs but I noticed that they didn't look like the bulbs that are on my truck right now. It's a 2001 2500 4WD. Furthermore, I believe that the computers at AutoZone showed that my truck requires the 893 bulbs to match the ones currently in it. This was odd too because when I took the factory bulbs out, they're labelled as 896s.
Another odd thing was that unlike Rattle_Rattle said, the 894 bulbs aren't 50 Watt bulbs. They're 37.5 Watt bulbs. This didn't really matter to me though because they looked nothing the bulbs I currently had.
Anyway, what I actually wound up doing was going to Pep Boys (because one of the guys at the Tyler AutoZone was a total jerk to me and I decided not to patronize that business any longer) and looked at the connectors on the two kinds of 8XX bulbs they had to compare with the 896 that came out of my truck. The 886 bulbs were 50 Watts and the connectors looked the same as my factory bulbs so I bought one to try. Voila! It worked! And it was noticeably brighter than the factory bulb (when in the light housing)! So I bought a second one and am now running Sylvania 886 50 Watt bulbs in my fog lights.
Moral of the story here? Your mileage may vary.
Powerwagon440,
Which bulbs were in your fogs factory-standard? Which bulbs did you replace them with? Did you try putting the replacement bulb that didn't work into the other light to see if maybe the bulb was blown altogether? Gotta give us some info, man.

OK, I know this is an old thread, but I have to ask: has anyone had any issues with replacing a 37.5W bulb (896) with a 50W bulb (886)? As in, any wiring harness melting or fires, any fuse problems, etc? I know it's only 12.5W more on each side, but it's 25W total, and, well, who knows?
Thanks!
Thanks!
