Re:first pull advise
It depends on your clutch. I have seen many guys blow clutches doing the 2kRPM drop in 3rd. If you have a gov kit that will hit 4200rpms ;D you will be going just as fast as a guy in 3rd gear at 2500 rpms :
Yes even a SBC 13" clutch has bit the dust with a 3rd gear drop. I did 2nd with a centerforce that will not hold 4th gear when driveing empty and it held great. I guess it just comes down to what power mods and clutch you are running. if you feel safe then try 3rd gear If you don't then its not a good idea unless you have a clutch that is up to the task.
just my .02

Re:first pull advise
Fellas, from someone who had his first pull 10 days ago, I found the best bet to be come out of the hole easy, no need to jerk the sled. Smooth action from the beginning will get you more footage, a jerking sled will just tear up the truck. I have an auto, but I was in low range first gear. The key to a good pull is to build up ground speed steadily as soon as possible without killing the truck. No fun pouring money into a new clutch cuz it impressed the fans when your truck ripped it up!

I'd like to throw my hat in the ring on this one. It's easy to burn up a clutch if it's not designed to pull with. I've done it more than once in a year's time ???. Here is what Haisley Machine told me to do with my dual disk McLeod. Come out of the hole at less than 1500 RPM, get off of the clutch within a revolution or two of the tires. Also, I might help to back off the throttle slightly and quickly once the load is moving to let the clutch catch up. I didn't do that and figured I may as well take the plunge and buy a Mitchell dual-disk because I'm tired of spending money on replacement parts. Have fun, I would stick with low 3rd, it will put you right up there in the pack.
BTW, if anyone is interested in a used dual-disk McLeod, drop me a pm, I'll make you a deal..............andy

Yep, it was the street twin. I have to say it was the most friendly clutch I ever drove, soft peddle, smooth engagement, no chatter (sounds like a good woman doesn't it ;D)

That's what I'm running now, it's a stout clutch. I've pulled once with it, it does a wonderful job on the track.

How about a every day driveing?

It's streetable, that's for sure. The peddle if firmer of course due to a high clamp load. I don't have any problems taking off in 2nd. It does buck just a bit but no worse than my TST clutch in the past. As far as shifting, it can be shifted pretty quickly. It's a good clutch so far, I don't think I'll wear it out anytime soon.
If I was never going to sled pull again, I would have kept my McLeod though. There are some trade-offs to each option. For pulling- Mitchell wins hands down (i've never tried another pulling clutch so I can't comment on others)
For ease of driving- McLeod takes the edge on this one, but the Mitchell has good manners considering what this clutch can take...............andy
