fire rings

When doing fire rings, are both the head and the block grooved or can I just have the head done?

Thanks,
Chad

what kind of metal?

I was at a machine shop the other day and they said they could O-ring my block with stainless steel rings instead of copper which they said is better, for 150 bucks, however I would have to remove the block and bring it to them. haha yea right. can this be done to just the head?

I think most people usually just do the head. It's cheaper to replace one of those than a new block.

For the most permanent results the grooves should be cut into the block by a machine shop that has done it before. They have to be spot on to ensure the rings will seal properly. The coffee grinder tool is also available to those who don't want to remove their block, but its sealing record isn't as good. When done properly fire rings + studs are failure free.

It can be done to either the head or block. Never heard that it makes any difference unless someone screws up.

So it can be either one and doesnt have to be both. I just want to have my head done since I have it off and taking the block in would be a pain. If just the head can be done with good results then great!!

I've had great results with my orings, ARP studs and head work done by DonM @ www.f1diesel.com. I'd atleast check with him to see what he's got to offer. His after the sale service is simply stellar.

Scheid o-ringed my block while the engine was being puffed up a bit. And went to bigger head studs.
