Fiberglass heatshield
Fiberglass heatshield
Got my template for the heatshield for the BHAF. Went to
the local surplus store for some material. They had some
really nice "Diamond Tread" aluminum sheets , but you
had to buy a whole 4' X 8' sheet for $171.00
Then
I saw some 1/4" thick fiberglass panels that I could cut out
and bolt together with angle brackets. Has anyone used any
material other than some type of metal for their heatshield.
I figure the fiberglass would not conduct heat like metal , but
wouldn't look as cool as Diamond Tread.

I have a friend that works for Hexel, they make carbon fiber for ATK Space Structures.
I am thinking of getting a roll of carbon fiber and making a heat shield. It would look way cool and have great function.
What needs to be done is first make a template out of steel of something like steel that won't melt. Stretch the carbon fiber over the "form" and place in the oven for a few hours @ 500*.
Then just drill the mounting holes.
When I get around to it I will post pictures of the process and progress.
