Fast Idle
Fast Idle
Hey Guys,<br>I've been enjoying this site tremendously. Loads of useful information and sometimes just plain fun. <br><br>I've just installed a high idle kit from Cummins (Alberta) on my 02 3500 6spd 4X4, it was really easy, good instructions, and seems to work just fine.<br><br>This is my first Cummins - just love, the wife likes it too (bonus) !

Alberta Eh?
Welcome Aboard Pat-3500 !!!!!
Check out our events area and chapter news. I am just getting the papers together for the Alberta Chapter #5 of the DTR.
Here are some pics of our last get together in July..Diesel DYNO Stampede.
As for the high idler, good idea. There was a slightly cheaper version by an electronics guy in Calgary. GCL Fuel systems sells the unit, don't know the price though.

Re:Fast Idle
When the temperature drops and you keep the truck running at idle to stay warm, the engine does not produce enough heat to completely burn all the fuel. this can lead to some problems, and as I understand it, especially with the valves. The high idle device lets you idle the engine at a higher rpm thus producing more energy (and in so doing also burning more fuel). A simpler device would be a stick on the accelerator pedal. There are guys on this site that know a lot more about this stuff than I do. I'm just learning - lots left to find out about.
Re:Fast Idle
can you elaborate more on the install??<br><br> it gets pretty cold here in KANSAS and i would be interested in that high rpm start-up-----<br><br> at one point i heard that the program can be activated in the trucks computer?? im not sure if that is true or not, but i sure would like to hear how yours was installed<br>thanks<br>BRYAN
Re:Fast Idle
Hello 'Patriot Blue'<br><br>The fast idle kit is a piece of electronics that fits between the throttle control and the ECM. It's the black box shown in the picture. The throttle plug is removed from the throttle assembly (snap plug underneath the assembly) and the male plug from the box is plugged in its place. The throttle plug is then plugged into the female snap clip plug from the box. Some power connection wires run from the box to the battery and an on/off switch is run from the box into the cab. A set screw under the cover of the box lets you set the idle speed.<br><br>The whole setup took me less than 30 minutes, and I'm no mechanic. <br><br>My dealer didn't know about the ECM cold weather idle feature. I showed him the TSB found on another site and then said he would enable it for about an hour's time (seems expensive) but truth be told I'd rather be in control of the idle. I'm a land surveyor in Alberta and it's either idle the truck or do 15-20 startups in a day.<br> <br>Hope I didn't muddy the waters too much,<br><br>Pat

I got mine reflashed @ the dealer it was the Extreme cold Pkg.<br>My truck idles for 6 minutes @ 825rpm then goes to 1200 on 3 cylinders until enough heat clicks it back down to 825 again. Only when its below 32 degrees. Above 32 same as always cold and get the stick from under the seat.<br> Danny
Re:Fast Idle
Pat 3500 the high idle cold weather system is already paid for in the purchase of your truck and when it doesn't work it is warranty. D/C has re-programmed mine 5 times, will not function put a standard hand throttle in and set it where I want. When it is really cold we put a cat tarp from top of rad to the back of the oil pan, this truck is lot better for heat than the 91 idling at 1500rpm. The old truck was also tarped in but we ran it at 1800-2100 just sitting idling, stops them from slobbering unburned fuel too. PK
Re:Fast Idle
I have a" command start" , made in Canada, installed in my truck that works in conjunction with an ajustable(750-1400) high idle kit. It's got multiple programing options. Run time<br>10 or 20 minutes and temperature settings of 32F,0F, and<br>-20F, I'm not sure of all the settings I don't have the book in front of me. Both items were installed by the dealer in Fairbanks Alaska. They also put semi-synthetic in the diff's<br>and two 150W heaters on the oil pan, one 150W heater on the tranny pan, one 60W heater under each battery and a 1200W block heater for the H2O mixed to -70F. As long as you can plug in or carry a 2000W generator your all set.

Dodge has a reflash that has some interesting improvemnets such as 3 cylinders firing and ramping up the idle? Some report it works some say it doesn't.<br><br>I do NOT have this reflash, just relaying what I know.<br>High Idle/Three cylinder TSB

Here is another link to a high idler, don't know if it's the same as prior. High Idler.
