EGTs????
EGTs????
So I got my gauge in and I got up to about 1350ish towing about 9500lbs up a long steep grade. It got to that temp quick and held it the whole way (8-9 min). The gauge is plumbed pre-turbo and the temp came way back down quickly going down the other side of the hill. Is this bad? The truck is described in the signature with no major engine mods yet. I don't know what is considered high but it seems to be around 1000 fairly consistantly.
Thanks

WOW
I was told don't go over 1250 for long periods. I wouldn't do that too often if I were you.
You may want to consider a higher flowing air filter and exhaust if you plan to run that grade.

Re:EGTs????
Ok, so what can I do to reduce EGTs? I have a K&N filter in the stock airbox with holes in the bottom end of it and a 4" exhaust. I am really concerned cause my Edge Comp box should be here in the next couple of days. I'm not hooking up the wire though till I get the trans upgrades that I need.
Re:EGTs????
Can I assume that's 4" of straight pipe? If not make it so! Also in your case I'd ditch the stock air box. It just won't flow enough cool air. Maybe look at an open element or I hear very good things about the Scotty system.
All of these will bring the EGT's down considerably.

Re:EGTs????
I used to be able to hit high egt numbers like yours pretty easily while towing my 9k 5th wheel in the mountains around where I live, even with my Scotty II. Since installing the Edge Ez and putting the turnbuckle on my turbo wastegate, I can hit 30lbs of boost and have not been able to get the egt's higher than 1150 degrees. I think the increased boost coupled with the Scotty II makes all the difference.
Re:EGTs????
What all the rest said.
If you're in an auto take it out of OD. In a stick, drop down a gear. Many say you can run 1350 all day. I don't want to try it. I hit 1350 once in a while for very short periods of time, but would never do it for 8 - 9 mins; even if I had to go clear down to low gear.
Just my 2c,
Stan

Re:EGTs????
I fully agree with Bearfoot2 on keeping the rpms up in a nice working range so the engine can flow some air. My egt will climb if I allow the rpm to drop back to the 1600-1700 range while staying in the throttle. Normally, I'm out of o/d way prior to this range. Even then I have only seen about 1175-1200 degrees (pre-turbo) prior to coming out of o/d. I am pulling a 10k 5er with 3:54, #8 fuel plate and no exhaust mods other than my cat. running away.
Another thing to check would be if your new gauge is reading on the high side.

Mine also hit about 1350 (about 10 seconds) going up a short but steep grade, with no mods at all towing about 9K. This surprised me because I wasn't really watching the EGT because I had taken my EZ box off to determine if the tranny would slip without it. Tranny didn't slip so I guess it's time to get some work done if I want to bomb.
