egt probe install
egt probe install
I just received my new Autometer Ultra-lite EGT and Boost gauges today from Geno's ;D and there seems to be some disagreement about where to mount the EGT probe. According to the directions with the gauge, Autometer says to install the probe 1-2" after the turbo outlet. I read somewhere else that the prefered probe mount is in the exhaust manifold. I don't want to run two gauges, (or a two-in-one gauge), and have both pre- and post-turbo EGT, so is the prefered mount before or after the turbo and what is the ideal location?
Re:egt probe install
I put mine pre turbo. It gives a more accurate reading as to what your egt temps really are.
There is a web site that shows where to drill on the manifold. I'll post it if I can find it ;D

You can find further info here:

http://gatewaydieselownersassociatio...amp;how_to=EGT AND here:
http://www.tstproducts.com/gauge_install.html
It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!

Don't forget that you can have one gauge and two probes. That way you can measure both pre and post turbo temps. Just install a small DPDT switch near the gauge and toggle between the two as required.
Re:egt probe install
Pre-turbo tells you exactly what the cylinders are seeing and is probably a "faster" update on the EGT. Post-turbo the temps are lower because they have passed farther down the system and have a chance to cool from radiation out the piping and contact with the drive impeller of the turbo. I would assume that this would also show a latency in the EGT changing due to the distance from the cylinder.
Either way they give you an inside look at what is going on with the fuel delivery and combustion process. I keep an eye on mine just to see if there are any noticable changes that I might want to investigate.
