Easy Safe Horsepower and Torque
Easy Safe Horsepower and Torque
I am new to the CTD and have a 03 3500 SRW. I love the power for towing, but would like more. I would like something simple, safe and effective. Any suggestions???

Currently, the 03s don't have a pile of options available to them for absolutely safe, reliable horsepower. Its sounds like you're in the market for a plug in power box and you currently have 3 options: Edge, Bully Dog, and Quadzilla. These boxes are very simple fuel pressure boxes that simply raise pressure on the rail to stuff more fuel into the cylinders during an injection event. I don't have any experience with the Quad box, however I've run both the EZ and the Bully unit, and feel that the Edge box is the better of the two. It starts raising pressure lower in the RPM range range (1400 vs Bully's new 1800 program) and is adjustable between 40 and 80 HP under the hood.

There is a caveat to these boxes: Early Duramax boxes raised pressure on the rail, and we discovered quickly that the CP3 injection pump wasn't capable of handling the pressures that the boxes were putting out. Seals were blowing all over the place. However, these early DMax boxes were raising pressure past the 30,000 PSI mark. The boxes for the Dodge won't peak past the 27,000 PSI mark, and Bosch swears their CP3 can handle peaks up to that point. There are also several 40K trucks running Edge fuel pressure boxes, and we haven't had any issues with seal problems. Ditto the Bully Box.

In a couple months time, Edge and TST will both have a true fueling/timing box available on the market. Fuel pressures won't be boosted, and as such, these boxes should be very safe for use on the Cummins. But I don't have any problems recommending the pressure boxes either. I've been really hammering my truck and haven't had any problems, but I do want you to be aware of a possible issue sometime later down the road.

Rod
