I've got Isspro gauges so I have an external amplifier box that runs the gauge stepper motor. Anyway I run it so its on when they key is on. I have my lights going to a dimmer circuit.
I don't know of any reason to have the motor portion be constantly on. It would continually read temp from the sender. If you went long enough it would run the battery down so why risk it.
My switched power source is a Painless Wiring bus, its a great product! It uses a key on source to pull in a relay. The feeds to the bus are fused and the branch circuits are fused too. Its a great mod that will keep excess loads off your truck.
Hope this helps!
