Sounds like you will need to do something about those EGT's. I built my Dad's 96 Auto/dually with a 4" exhaust, AFE intake, a number 6 Plate, the AFC kit, and a shift kit. With this combonation he can hit 1500* towing with the cruise control!!
I am going to put a 14cm3 housing on his turbo soon to help lower the EGT's, since he tows all the time with this truck a bigger turbo is really not an option. He will be getting a rebuilt by me tranny this spring along with a new TC.
Good luck, don't "melt her down" with those EGT's, 1290 is the safe max!!!!

Great job so far, but face it - - you'll want the 370's eventually. Seriously, smart approach adding, rechecking and refining. If any gremlins do creep in you'll know exactly what caused it. Nice numbers with the plate and DV's. I'll be watching to see how the HTB2 goes. PM if I can help. Keep BOMBing.

What kind of problem did you have when you installed your HTB2? I know it had something to do with the oil lines. I just want to know if I need to get anything before I take my truck apart.
Thanks for your help Paul.

Masonic-Dodge: I have about a #5 plate in my truck, and before the 3k GSK pulling about 11k+ LBS, the hottest i could ever get it was right on 1300 degrees. After the GSK, it killed my low end power, so i adjusted my Governor Lever Arm, and i have all my power back, but man the EGT's just fly up. I think part of it is that im hitting 40lbs of boost at WOT. My truck does a lot better at lower RPM's. Something about the higher RPM's like 2800 or so makes my EGT's go through the roof. I guess because my plate doesent defuel any up there, so it just keeps trying to pull farther, and the EGT's will fly up. Im getting a 16cm turbo housing sometime soon, so that should basically take care of my EGT's pretty good, but my plate is full forward. Anytime i have moved a plate back from full forward much at all, it has killed the power a decent little bit, but EGT's have also gone down. Have you guys had as much power running the plate centered as full forward? I would center it if you guys think it would run just as good but with lower EGT's. I dont know, but after the GSK my EGT's are a lot worse than they used to be. I didnt EVER have to watch the Pyro pulling if i didnt want to, but now i have to watch it just running from 0-60 hard
. If its not to much trouble, try your plate centered, and then full forward on a dyno run and check EGT's, and post the #'s if you dont mind; as long as its not to much trouble. Thanks
Eric

Wayne at Wayne's dyno jacksonville N.C. is real easy to work with. When he has dyno days (once and awhile on saturdays) it costs $40.00 for 2 runs or $60.00 for 4 runs and $10.00 for each extra run, not bad at all! Any other day he gets $60.00 for 2 runs or $100.00 for 1 hour on the dyno. When DTR came on sat Dec 4th he charged us the lower rates. I think its smarter to pay by the run because 1 hour goes by real quick when you have your truck apart
I've been told that by moving my plate and starwheel all the way forward I'll get more low end. I guess by the time I get back to Wayne's I'll have to do about 8 runs to get all these tests done. I have no problem doing all the runs, whats $100.00 spent if all the members get a better idea of what each mod does and gains or even looses
If you come up with anything else let me know. Use this thread.

There was a limited clearance between the oil-return line (on the bottom side of the turbo) and the wastegate actuator rod. Because the oil return line is low pressure and the tube about 1" in diameter you may need to peen that area down to clear it. It may take several hefty wacks with the hammer. I found that attaching the tube to the turbo then sliding the whole thing in and slipping the oil return line into the receiver on the engine block was easier than attaching the oil return line with the turbo attached to the exhaust manifold. Check your PM's

Cris,
If you get a chance, can you do some fuel mileage info
when you make your changes. Thats the other side of the coin, so to speak.
Can you make the injectors first & the turbo last?
I would be interested in how the two changes affect the outcome of the project.
That's the direction I will be taking on my truck.
Cumminsdriver635,
Which way did you adjust the Governor Lever Arm? Did you measure it before & after? Can you show any photos on this?
I have a #4 plate with 3,000 Gov & AFC spring kits in now, my exhaust is 4". I can't make the kind of heat
you describe. I get plenty of smoke
but slow spooling. I do have the 16 manifold. Is this the reason
for lower EGT's ?
Thank Guys,

My World: So you have a 16cm turbo housing? If so, then this is the reason you have less heat, and a little slower spoolup. Less heat is a good thing though, and if you can make quite a bit of smoke then you should be getting plenty of fuel. Very soon i should be going to a 16cm housing. I hope for EGT's that are VERY mainatanable even with my foot in it hard pulling a load, and still good spool up. What kind of EGT's are you seeing? If you mash it from a dead stop, what is like the hottest it will get, and how fast are you going by then? Also, how much boost are you seeing at Wide Open Throttle? I didnt do any measuring of before or after the Governor Lever Adjustment, but i found a very good page on piers site which clearly shows how to do it, and the worst part is getting to the back of the pump with your hands, and tools to do it. Just adjust it to the very top of the very bottom lip on the plate, so that you get full fueling right when you start feeding her the throttle
. Also, to be able to see the arm, you have to raise the fuel shutoff solenoid arm up, and just give it just enough throttle by hand on the side of the pump, or with a buddy in the truck, till it hits the plate, and if it hits very far under the bottom lip at all, then it needs to be adjusted. Here is the link with pictures, and instructions:

Also, before i adjusted my governor lever arm, my truck would still smoke a lot before boost, but after you got any boost at all, it would clear up.If you have any questions about it just ask

You and I have talked on the phone and you know that I drive my truck like I stole it
Mileage yea right Wayne like I ever check my mileage, thats a joke. You know if you have to worry about mileage you just need to stay in the house and let me burn up all the diesel. But really Wayne I would check it but I'm having to nuch fun now with my new mods
. As for doing the injectors first I can't, my EGTs are to high
now to even think about doing it that way.
Wayne just see what I get for results and go from there. I think I'm going to spend the money and get TWINS
this spring and sell the HTB2,exhaust and what ever injectors I end up with.
Wayne Eric and every one else stay tuned its going to get GOOD

I have the same truck as you started with when I added the 215's my egt's went down I could not beleave it either but I had talked to piers and on his advice I tried it and he was right the way he explained it was because of a better spray angle. I also tried the 191 dv's and like the punch they gave me but egt's were crazy and I actually lost power while pulling because my egt's would get way out of hand so I put a 60 mm compressor wheel on my turbo and that was even worse I could not get the turbo spinnig soon enough before my egt gauge was pegged so I switched to the 58 mm compressor and that helped a lot but not good enough so I traded the 191's for 181's and that did it I still had good punch but egt's are good .

Good Morning Eric,
You are right about the reason for less heat. TST reccommended the 16 manifold for more HP & TQ. Plus it works great at mid to top end. The EGT's are low. I get about 600, after turbo readings average. Under WOT pulling the 500 pounds of sand tubes, 2wd going uphill, I can go to about 850 at 70 mph. I could use more heat. I don't pull anything so I rarely have an issue there. I run a 30 pound boost at WOT. It takes a while but when it does, I love that feeling.
What do you attribute the 40 pounds of boost? How did you get it that high?
I get plenty of smoke from the start by turning the star wheel all the way forward. Where's your star wheel? It makes up a little for the initial turbo lag.
It sounds like the same problem that you went thru. I'll have to wait till the hands heal from thumb surgery. Well thats what spring is for!!!!!
Thanks for the information from Piers.

I've got 39lbs boost with my combo, I like it because it is instant boost. I can not believe how quick it builds boost. I know that it will change when that HTB2 goes on, it will be slower
but it will be alot cooler

My World: Hows it goin? Im planning on switching to a 16cm turbo housing soon to lower my EGT's, because i pull quite a bit in the summer. If i were you, i would leave your turbo like it is, because if its anything like mine just going from 0-60mph gets me 1450 degrees
.Also, my starwheel, AFC housing, and fuel plate are both full forward, it was just before i adjusted my governor lever after i installed my GSK that i lost the smoke/power. Now that its adjusted, the only problems i have is EGT's, and a slipping TC
. As for my boost. It was only hitting 36lbs before the GSK(which was enough), and after the GSK, and governor lever adjustment, i could hit 40lbs
. I have an adjustable boost elbow, and until last night, it was not letting the wastegate open at all i guess. I adjusted it down to about 35lbs of boost at WOT hoping for lower EGT's, but not really much diference. If your fuel plate is full forward(is it?), then i would think you could get some pretty good smoke running along in overdrive, and mashing it; or at least mine does. If not, you may need to do the governor lever adjustment? If im running along at higher RPM's with no load in like 3rd gear(around 2k rpm's), and it is say putting out 8lbs of boost, i could mash it, and the boost gauge will fly up, but i think they all do that. Its fun to watch. Any questions, just ask
. Fine tuning is essential to these 12 valves from what ive learned.
