dyno day

A friend of mine bought a dyno. He is going to have a diesel dyno day. He has a duramax. There will be duramax, cummins, and powerstrokes there. Prob. around 8 trucks total. It's just a bunch of friends getting together. I will have the only cummins. I'm having some injectors put in before I go. I was told they are 125 h.p. and 250 torque. Are there any tricks to putting down a good dyno number? Should I be in O.D. or Drive? I want to impress the boys with the dodge. They all have programers or other mild "bombs". I hope to compete with the other trucks.

I would think you would dyno in drive and let the tq conv lock up so you will have a 1:1 ratio. Based on the mods in your sig and the new injectors, you should lay down between 415-450 hp.

so... just get on the dyno, put it in drive and mash the skinny peddle? sounds easy enough to me.

If you pull in 3rd gear TC lockup that is a 1:1 with the engine and gets the true-ist hp numbers. With what you are saying above is going to be installed I would say 350-400 is what you might put down. Ask him to put a 10% load on the dyno to make the engine pull harder. You can also rig up a TC lock switch. On the ride side of the truck is the PCM. The black plug closet to the engine is the one you tap into. Look for PIN 11 (Orange wire with black stripe) But PIN 11 is the one you want. Its right on the corner of the plug. Ground one wire to the fire wall or fender and run to a toggle switch in the cab. Tap into PIN 11 and run that wire to the toggle switch in the cab. Then while on the dyno you hit 3rd gear TC lock-up turn on the toggle switch so when you hit the skinny pedal the tranny wont shift out of lockup on you. But remember to turn it off right after you take your foot out of it and DONT hit the brakes! You can also pull in 4th gear TC lockup. This will get you higher torque number than 3rd gear. Hope this has helped.

another question... will it do better if I get the hot unlock mode? If I remember it dont change the HP or torque, it just fuels more aggressive. The hot unlock is probably more for racing.

I can't answer your box question. My "95 with 3.55's will hold 60 MPH in OD with TC locked. That's like 12/1300 RPM. The lower you load your engine, the quicker you can make boost and show true numbers. If you have a laggy turbo and have to turn 2200 to make boost, you are out of the TQ peak in my opinion.

Also, air your tires to max pressure. Low pressure in the tires creates resistance/friction that eats your power.

Also run stock size tires. Large tires require more inertia to rotate and you want all your TQ to go to the drums under the rear tires, not into the tires themselves.

I think the dyno measures the time required to spin the drum and calculates the HP.

Good luck and let us know what you do. You may be surprised at the HP the V8 diesels make, but they will not challenge your Cummins for torque!

Be sure to point that out. Tell them a Honda with a turbo makes HP, where is the diesel torque! LOL Then start looking around the floor like you are hunting their torque numbers.

I'm bad I know!

That is funny. I will post all the numbers. Looks like we are going to dyno the week after christmas. Thanks for the advice.
