Dual HID Installation on 2001 Ram

Purchased aftermarket projector low beam headlamps with separate high beam headlamp. Installed them and the computer didn't like what I did. Highbeams worked, but for low beams both high and low beams turned on but with low illumination.

As I was planning to install HID bulbs and ballasts in both low and high beam positions, I purchased canbus ballasts. Thought my issue would go away but it didn't.

The three-way plug for the aftermarket headlight assembly has two power wires and a common ground. So each canbus ballast uses one of the power wires but they share the common ground.

Any idea what I did wrong?

You need some resistors to fool the CAN-BUS into thinking that the original lights are there.

Call the company you ordered your kit from and let them know this is your issue, and you need the resistor kit for your truck.

The 01 is not canbus and doesn't require resistors. It's a wire configuration issue at the connector.

Yeah, from an HID website I jumped on was on it looks like the black wire is quite possibly NOT ground, that it's a power wire and the red wire and white wires are ground for the two filaments. I'll use a voltmeter on the pins to confirm.

They just used generic coding of the wires.

Yup. You got that right. Wondering where I should make the change? Moving the pins would be the easiest if they're moveable...

Move the pins, that's also a common fix.

We had to do that on my kid's '04 1500 when we went with Morimoto 3Five DSP's ..... the blue plug needed a pin swap.

You're correct… I got it done with the pin swap. Through my testing I also realized that the headlight system is grounding system to activate the headlights and change from low beam to hi.

Because I have dual HID and the lamps take a couple seconds to warm up I now need to figure out how to keep the low beams on when the highbeams are turned on.

I saw another post from a few years back wherein a couple of wires under the steering column are bridged to accomplish this, so I'll look into that.

For the low and high, just put a jumper in the fuse box at the relay. I don't remember the location, but you can do a search to find it.

I have the Dodge manual so I can look that up… If it's as easy as that then that shouldn't change the amount of draw as they would be separate circuits I would imagine… Don't want to start engine fire

Single headlamp has 1/15 amp fuse per side. It's a switched ground system, not 2 hots each.
