do I really need a set of guages?

Just had #6 cam plate put in and they were about to put a 16 turbo housing on when we found that it already had one. Put the restrictor on the wastegate and low and behold the thing takes off like a rocket and for the first time I've got passing ability.
I bought my dually with the intent to put a big camper on it, but as of yet I haven't got one so I'm not pulling a whole lotta weight. Do I need a set of guages right now or wait till I really start pulling?

thanx Mitch

I've said it before and I'll say it again at LEAST get an EGT (pyrometer gauge) for peace of mind if nothing else.

Re:do I really need a set of guages?

This is from Ted Jannetty.
This should be page one in the "BOMB"er's Bible.

Proper Order for BOMBing

1. Guages, Boost, Pyrometer, optional Transmission Temp.

2. K&N (or any free-flow) air filter in the stock air box or a scotty air system. (COOOoooOOOoooL)

3. 4" exhaust turbo to tail pipe, preferably mandrel bent aluminized.

4. Then some sort of fuel enhancements, i.e. Van AAken CPC (Edge, TST, etc), or larger injectors, but not both at the same time until

5. Upgrades to the torque converter and valve body on Auto's, or a clutch on a manual
High quality low stall converter, preferably 1600 rpm, and a valve body modifications to recalibrate to handle the extra power. I prefer the Centerforce dual friction clutch on the manuals.

6. Depending on what you choose on #4 finish the job with injectors or Box.

7. 1/2 inch fuel system to feed that hungry powerhouse, and keep that injection pump cool and lubricated.

8. US Gear 20% Overdrive auxiliary transmission so you can use all that new found power. How's 1800 rpms at 75 mph sound?

9. A BD turbo mount exhaust brake to slow her down.

Should also have included:
10. Large box of tissues, and a roll of duct tape, for all the competition after you "blow their doors off"

Re:do I really need a set of guages?

I would recommend gauges for peace of mind and be able to monitor what is going on with your truck. I put in Westach Gauges in May of 2002. I have the Westach EGT/Boost (0-50) Combo, Fuel Pressure (0-30), and Transmission Temp.

About a month ago, I lost most of my fuel pressure coming from the lift pump. If it had'nt have been for the fuel pressure gauge, it would have probably burnt up the injection pump. The dealer replaced the lift pump under the 100 K warranty, so it didn'ty cost me a thing, but I wouldn't have known it was bad without the gauge.

While pulling my 30 ft 5ver out West last summer, I was also able to keep an eye on the tranny temp, fuel pressure, exhaasut temp. and boost, especailly pulling through the mountains and across the desert in California and Nevada.

I think they are well worth the money!!

Good luck!!

Re:do I really need a set of guages?

I get this question all the time when people ride in my truck and see my gauges. My response is I really don't need that fuel level gauge. It doesnt help the truck performance but If I didnt monitor the level you may be pushin
Roger

p.s. Bare min. you need a EGT.
2 EGT and Fuel

Yomitch,

Look at the Top of your screen where it says "Click here to shop our Online Store". In Online Store are listed two brands from which to select, ISSPRO and Autometer. Prices are listed.

Pyrometers start at $117.95, Boost at $36.99, and Tranny Temp at $29.98.

They have lots of other goodies as well.

Re:do I really need a set of guages?

You DEFINITELY want to get EGT and boost gauges.
Both are very useful for keeping an eye on what's going on. EGTs can rise much more quickly now that your pouring in more fuel. If you have an automatic, consider a trans temp gauge. I believe your engine has the mechanical lift pump like mine- they almost never give problems, so you may not really need a fuel pressure gauge.

My gauges and a 3-gauge dash mount pod cost about $200.

Mitch, send me a message if you want info on buying gauges in your neck of the woods. Make sure you mount the thermocouple before the turbo, not after.
Marc
