are cummins owners liars?

ok, here goes. Just ground a custom 100 plate for my 96 12 valve with 134k. then I slid the afc forward. I left the star wheel alone. no need to waste more fuel. I see very little power increase with the plate ground. I do see the egt go up to around 1100. I have a 4" straight pipe as well.

Here's the question. Am I missing something? Or does the piece of Edited By Moderator auto tranny just eat up that much power?

I'm not looking for a fast truck. I have a Porche 930 turbo and a Mitsubishi EVO. I just want to be able to pull my 20k gooseneck and not be embarrassed.

do I need to do anything else to get the power I want and need or should I go back to the 03 04 truck I used to have?

Take that GSK out of the box and put it in the truck to start, that will make a huge difference. I have the same truck minus two extra wheels and tires on the rear axle and my auto does eat up alot of the power with a stock converter. Cummins owners are not liars, at least not this one. Good luck.

As stated

the auto trans and the lack of the GSK in there really are hurting you more than anything... Install that GSK, Play with the AFC positioning and starwheel as well.. that will yield you some better results...

definately loosen up the AFC! on my stock 98, I ground the plate flat (not deep, but flat), slid it forward, and yanked the AFC spring... it ran pretty good and smoke wasn't bad at all.

the 47RE is a turd though untill you throw some money at it... if you're planning on keeping it mild and want a good trailer yanker, do a valve body and converter, it'll be night and day

The 930 is a Krouter....not a ricer.

I'll run my 930 against any cummins any time. as for the evo, it's for corners.

So what are we looking at for converter and valve body? Price I mean?
I think I'd be better suited just to swap a manual in the truck. Is it normal for the egt to go to 1100 while under foot? The gauge (isspro) is in the yellow zone at that temp.

Glad I got everyone's attention with my post. This truck is just a dog. While I'm at it. what does 16.5* timing do?

Timing will help you quite a bit, especially when you get the GSK in, it lets the engine work better in the higher RPM range, and will cool EGT's. As stated the auto tranny, isn't much when it comes to adding HP. As far as tc and valve body goes, different companies have different prices but you can get it done fore $1800 or less.

Severel good companies out there. I consider these the three best

Did you adjust the govener arm to follow the plate correctly? That can also make a big difference.

Throw some money at basic mods for that evo and it will be a monster.

Nope, keeping it stock. I like it just the way it is.

The timing

sorta moves the powerband a little bit. You will lose just a hair of lower end, but your truck will really come alive past 2000 rpms, rather than the 1500 rpms that it lights at with stock timing. Combine the timing with a GSK and you will see what we all love about these trucks..

One of the best mods you can do is a torque convertor and valve body if you are pulling a 20k 5er. It will get the power you have to the road and not be wasted in that stock convertor. It will almost feel like a manual tranny when it shifts.
