Cummins Missing. Lift pump?

Hello Im new to this forum and i just purchased a 00 dodge 2500 5sp diesel Three days ago. One thing that i wanted to do first is replace the lift pump. the truck has 214000 on it and i think it never has been changed. Sometimes when i get past 2000rpm it sputters and shakes like it has no fuel. it also blows little puffs of white smoke out the exhaust when it does that. today i tested it i did the crank over for a second test and see how long the pump turns on. it only turned on for about 2 seconds. I was just wondering where to buy and what pump should i get and where ,Carter, or OEM? thanks mario

Let me make this clearer, The 1st time you turn on the ignition the fuel pump will run 30 seconds, then if you try again it will only run 2-3 seconds or not at all, you need to wait 30 seconds or so till it will run again. Once the engine starts it should run all the time. The computer controls the lift pump.

You need a fuel pressure gauge to check the fuel pressure and shouldn't never let it go below 6psi under load at WOT.

If you just bump the starter, the pump should run for 20 or 30 seconds. Also check for codes to make sure you don't have an IP code in there. You can do a Big Line Relocation Kit and that will make a big difference. Make sure to get gauges though. Good luck and welcome to DTR!
