Can it be done?
Id like to take my truck and have it running mid 13's with the stock 215 injectors, and turbo without piston melting EGT's.. last time I was at the drag strip, I was running a 15.1. I may be running really high 14's now. At the end of the 1/4 my EGT's are about 1250*. Im running about 34psi of boost. Im guessing im around 320hp or so as it sits. So say I put a ported head with studs on, some 191 delivery valves, and maybe some pump work along with an ATS manifold, and probably hybrid my turbo and thow on my 18.5cm housing, would I be in the 13's with say 420hp or so with fairly manageable EGT's? Say 1450-1500* at the end of the 1/4? I think it can probably be done. Im just gonna have to do all the airflow modifications I can in order to do it. Id like to be able to be fairly competitive in the work stock class at Scheid, and the stock turbo classes around here. So what are your opinions on this? Thanks
Eric

In all seriousness, for all the money you're gonna spend making the stock charger work at those levels, you could bolt on a bigger one, that is tougher, and more efficient for a few more dollars!
The stockers aren't worth a CRAP on a 12v about 275-325hp...go bigger and forget about it!

I dunno eric it is going to be hard for you to be competive in the work stock class with the third gens laying down 500hp on stock turbos. Your plan does seems sound but the EGT's are still going to be toasty with that combo. To get in the 13's you would need to do a boosted launch which needs some billet shafts so you need to add that to your list.

Yeah, I realize im at least gonna need some billet shafts. Im not sure what I want to do with my truck yet. Just trying to plan it out so i can start gathering parts.

I meant to say a cam such as a Helix 2 also, but i forgot.
I figure that if I did do all this stuff, and have a stock turbo, then it would just be that much better with a bigger turbo, so it wouldnt go to waste either way. I guess more than anything im just throwing around some ideas.Eric

and having seen John Rodriguez lay down over 450 on a stock turbo'd third gen, its gonna be tough for anyone to compete with that, A big blue bottle will help you overcome the stock turbo and intercooler deficinecies, but you might need to port the head and have some rings added to it as well.. Being that you can only get about 38 psi max efficient boost out of the 35, well, id say ur short changed....

Oh Ye of little faith.
A good ported head with a cam on a 12 valve will surely outflow a stock 3rd gen motor air wise, so in that case, I could make 450hp or better, right? They dont really have any better of a turbo than we do so I think its doable. The stock 35 isnt worth much on a truck with no airflow improvements, but I think with the right cam and head and a hybrid turbo that it would make 450 or so which is enough to be competetive in the work stock. A lot of it is power, but a lot of it is truck set-up too....

I'm not saying it can't be done...but dollar for dollar, a bigger charger is a well placed bandaid for the 12v engine. When you start figuring parts, it cheaper too!
Helix 2 w/ bolt on gear - $950
Headwork, porting and o-rings - $1500 MINIMUM with the o-ringing and gaskets
Hybrid - $500
ATS Manifold - $500
SPS62 - $1700 IIRC
Remember, I said it can be done...but is it worth that much to be different?? I'm shooting for 700hp and 12.0 in the 1/4 with no smoke once the boost hits. But I've got an 82mm ball-bearing charger sitting here, and another smaller one will go on top, fed by a Helix 2 and a very ported head. Not too mention all the pump work, custom injectors, and possibly nitrous it will take to make this happen...just to be "different"
Sorry for the long post guys
Chris
