cam or head??
If you were rebuilding a 12 valve motor and you had have pistons would it be better to put a 24 valve head on or put a cam in it?

also, not sure if a 24 valve head will properly locate the injectors to spray in the 12 valve piston bowls...im not a betting man but i dont believe that'll work.

They have kits available to convert from a 12v 7100 pump to a 24v engine. You just need to get new injector lines. I would run the 24v with the VP. Its a better daily driver. IMO .Of course if your building a maxed out HP junky truck forget the 24v head and run a 12v. They take more abuse and can with stand more heat of pulling. There better coolant flow in the head, less air paths with a 12valver.

I don't know Mike I would have to disagree with you on this one.
I have owned both and my 12v actually has 50-70hp more than the 24v and I couldn't be happier. I drive it every day with no issues (or worries ) no dead pedal syndrome, no apps issues, no lp worries, no code pulling, I just simply get in and drive. It consistently runs the same every time with no variations that make me wonder...what was that...
The only point I can give to the 24v is 3-5 power settings where as the 12v only has 2 but other than that I feel that a 550-600hp 12v is just as streetable as a 24v if its built right, and way more reliable to boot.

Go with the cam...... A 12v head can be ported to flow more than a 24v with the proper work. You also get the larger valve stems (have seen the 24v valves break). You also would not need any conversion parts and anyone could work on it if you broke somewhere away from home. The cam will help with overall performance. Normal performance gains are not measured in peak HP but rather broader power curves. Just my $.02 worth
