Bully Dog Torque Dog+ 2003 Review

Finally managed to get my mitts on a Bully Dog box for the 2003 Cummins today.

The box is a 70 HP fuel pressure boost box, and from talks with Bully Dog, they kept it mild to prevent any drivability problems (vis a vis injection pump seal issues). They have also purposely detuned the bottom end of the box to prevent rapid ramp up pressures, again in the hopes of preserving seal integrity.

Installation was a snap, just plug into the fuel pressure sensor, and the map sensor, then plug the truck harness into the box. Velcro to the fuse box lid, and you're rollin'.

Initial impressions

They're right, the box doesn't do much below 2200 RPM. But once it gets to 2200, the truck will take off good. Automatic owners should get a heck of a kick out of it. 5 and 6 speed guys will have to drive their trucks pretty aggressive to get a true seat of the pants kick.

Noise levels aren't any higher, primarily due to the pilot injection events not being affected by increased rail pressure.

Boost isn't up at all, but Bully Dog currently doesn't ship with a boost elbow. This weekend, I'll throw an adjustable elbow onto the truck and see what happens. EGTs get up there pretty good (1300F at WOT), but increased boost may help. Fuel pressure gets down pretty good. I'm seeing 8 at idle right now, and at WOT, I drop to 0.

Rod

Re:Bully Dog Torque Dog+ 2003 Review

Tomorrow, she gets the test with the Ram Air 3 pulling from the front area. I had it crippled tonight, and was just pulling from the fender inlet to emulate the stock airbox. That fender inlet is terrible for airflow

As for the fuel pressure, it do indeed look like something is going to need to be done with it, although I'd like to get a flow meter on it, versus just a pressure gauge. The CP3 is supposed to do its own fuel transfer while the lift is simply around to prime the system, but I can't help but think that additional pressure would be nice to have, especially since the higher power crowd has managed to empty out the CP3 (dunno which stage emptied, or why).

Rod

Re:Bully Dog Torque Dog+ 2003 Review

Lately I have not been able to have much fun with my RAMS. The old tired 97 is still my favorite, but this 03 is one cool outfit. I just feel like its missing something.......about 250 or so HP is what its missing ;D More goodies are in the works for it to cure its anemia. Wondering how much power that LUK is gonna take ??? Will I be the first to roast a stock LUK clutch?
Stay tuned!!! I need a Scotty air for the fuel system upgrades we are working on. Oh yeah this turbo looks like something off a ricer. Geesh its tiny winy! Gotta deal with that too. Maybe if the 97 gets some air upgrades the Pius worked HX55 will find its way under the hood of that 03. Can you say " goodbye anemia and hello HP"?

Don~

My 01 wasn't exactly tuned for bear, but it was definitely stronger than the 03 is. I'm looking forward to a set of your injectors. Apparently, stacking the injectors and a fueling box on an 03 nets you more horsepower than the components by themselves. Definitely a function of rail pressure, but I'll be curious what happens when the true timing/fueling boxes come down the pipe...

2) Possibly, but I don't think I'll be too far behind you. The stock clutch isn't exactly heaven sent [undecided]

3) Even little baby turbochargers need love Kurt, Scotty and I are working on [censored] to address this issue. I plan to be the first to blow a head gasket on an 03

Rod
