Built Tranny Or Manual Conversion???
Built auto or manual trans coversion on 99 4x4? How hard is it to do the conversion and how much is a decently priced built auto, good valve body and torque coverter? I was informed that either way would cost about the same amount just wanted more imput on both and what would hold up good for everyday driving, fun, and some track and pulling? I have also always wanted a manual any advice?
if you want a manual go for it. You can still do a little racing but you won't be that competetitve, but you will do well on the sled. The auto will be much faster at the track and not sure how well they work on the sled. Both will be fine for daily driving, you just need to decide on how fast you want to be. If your not into the track then go manual. Just my two cents
I had a slightly "built" automatic (very slightly) with a Goerend single disk TC and valve body... it was nice, but I did the NV4500 conversion and haven't looked back. Every time I drive the truck, the best way to describe it is

. In other words, I love it. Don't expect to catch people off the line though.

From what Ive read on here, Guys with that much HP, who are racing, are doing 3rd gear launches. That only leaves 2, maybe 3 shifts moving down the strip.
Im sure it can be done,(the manual conversion) but I would read up on this alot more to help w/ your decision.

Next week I'm going to the track to see what I can put down. I'm not quite 500 hp but I will be very happy if I break into the 14's. My first pass ever which happened a few weeks ago, resulted in 15.577 sec. If my truck had an automatic transmission with identical modifications, it would run high 13's.
If you want to race, stay with your auto. It will be cheaper to build your current tranny than to switch to a manual transmission with the upgraded input, upgraded hydraulics, and dual disc clutch. Not to mention the cost of the tranny and other odds and ends.
Where do you live? If you found someone to trade trucks with, you could save money on the switch.
