Building stacks

I am very interested in putting some stacks on my truck, the only problem is that i have a cap on it. I would toss the cap off, but i need it for work to keep equipment out of the rain and snow. Is there any way to build stacks with leaving the cap still on? Has anyone done this? I have only seen one truck with stacks and a cap. I would like to avoid running the stacks along the outside of the truck bed. There is a picture of my truck with the cap on it in my gallery, Thanks

Might be able to use a hole saw to cut holes for the stacks to go through.

i wouldnt like them on the outside either. umm there is a way but it would take alot of fabrication and welding. you could run them between the cab and the bed and make them go that way. but youd have to cut the bed and the cover and everything. its not impossible, jsut a lot of work

CTD2001, I was thinking of doing the same thing as you. I was going to cut holes in my topper for stacks. I was talking to a buddy of mine the other day, he has a freind that did just that. He says when his friend is driving up the street it looks like his truck is on fire , Supposedly hes had people chase him down to tell him hes on fire, so I decided against it. I too need to keep my topper on to secure my tools. I am going to look into getting a Tonaue cover and running stacks through that. Afterall I think that if you go through the expense of getting stacks you want people to see em

Yeah i agree with you, if you going to run stacks, you want people to see them and the smoke blowing out of them. I had a tonneau cover before i got the cap, but it was difficult getting equipment in and out of the bed with the cover on. Stacks are very tempting though, i just might have to toss the cap and deal with the cover

There is a member on TDS called KAINERS that put stacks through his topper. Might want to look him up.

If you wanna look like a semi truck, then mount them on the side like a semi.

might as well get the heatshield to go over it too..

Putting stacks outside the box, looks better on a dually. Still looks a little weird, though. MCummings has them outside the box.

1) either run them through the tonneau cover
or
2) just drop the stacks idea and straight pipe it 5 inch

no matter what if u have tons of stuff in the box then ur gonna be always worryign about the pipes cause ur gonna be burning anything thats gonna slide up and down in that box

I have seen a set of stacks that were made into the coners of the box. He actually used square tubing in the corners of the box and then but his stack on top of these. This would prevent any water getting into the be and rusting the tools. Would need some slight modification to the tonneau cover though. Just an idea.

Buy some pipe thats a few inches larger than the pipe you plan to use for the stacks. Run the stack pipe through the larger pipe and stuff the empty space with high temp. fiberglass packing to insulate the outer pipe. It might still get slightly warm, but shouldn't get hot. You should be able to come up with other methods to insulate the pipe.
