Bucking/Jerking While Towing with F1 Mach 1's
Bucking/Jerking While Towing with F1 Mach 1's
I installed a new set of Formula 1 Mach 1 injectors about 2 months ago. All seemed well until I hooked up my 10,000# fifth wheel camper for a trip to FL for the Holidays. The truck bucked very noticeably when pulling grades. Since the outside temps were about 19 degrees I thought I might have been gelling. Added more anti-gel to the fuel but this didn't help. Even though the truck bucked it seemed to pull strong but even stranger yet the further south we got, the smoother the truck ran. Arriving in FL with temps in the 70's the truck ran fine. While there I replaced the fuel filter just in case. On the return trip the truck ran fine until temps got below 45 degrees then the bucking/jerking started again and continued for the remainder of the trip home. I have a new DDRP lift pump putting out 20PSI at idle so fuel delivery isn't a problem.
The stock injectors always ran smoothly and I would think a new set of injectors would run as smoothly as the stock ones. I bought the injectors from Olee at Power by Poole but he no longer deals with Formula 1. Does anyone have any suggestions or does anyone know of any way I can talk to someone from Formula 1 about this issue? I Can't fine any contact info on their website except for Dealers. Thanks....

Bob wagner (DTR Member) used to deal them . IF there really F1 s I cant see them as the problemby them self's I have had my 01 HO buck and I have mach1.6s but it only does it at 1700 rpm or lower with a heavy load I think it has more to do with the timing advance from the tuner. But it might also be the combo of both .
like I said mine only dos it under heavy load and to low rpms for the load. But i love the fact my F1s get me 11-12 mpg towing 16950 lbs, my cheby got 4

low temps increase timing, which can also be exaggerated by larger sticks, especially at lower rpms. I've never heard of this problem with a small injector like the mach 1s. maybe try resetting the APPS, or see if it's better with the EZ turned off.
It's a combination of low outside temps, your EZ and a set of bigger than stock injectors. For the most part, it's normal, just get used to it.
As the outside temps get back up, it will go away. If you want to try it, unplug your EZ but leave the map sensor portion plugged in. The EZ won't work but it will still act as a boost fooler and the problem will go away.
When I ran my EZ, I modified the wiring to incorporate a switch into it so I could "turn off" the EZ without having to get under the hood to unplug anything. It worked awesome. I used it all the time when it was cold, it really helped on super cold mornings because with it off, I could eliminate the timing hammer until it was warmed up.

I have the 6-speed manual tranny so it's not related to this. I did modify the Can-Bus to EZ connection to be able to disable the EZ, did notice a reduction in bucking with an empty truck but not much change when towing.
How do I reset the APPS?
I bought these injectors primarily for better towing MPG...didn't see any increase when towing but about 2MPG when empty. Also didn't really notice much power improvement over stock injectors with the EZ. Since I do tow alot in the winter I may be forced to go back to stock injectors to eliminate the annoying bucking. Also this jerking can't be good for the drivetrain...

Do have hard time starting the truck in the morning or after letting the truck sit for lenghtly period of time? You might not have a good seal on one of you're injectors. Check to see if the injector retainer bolts are tight. Check the connector tube adjuster nuts are tight. Did you put new orings on the connector tubes? Is the injection lines at the pump tight? You get any codes?

Truck starts right up even after sitting a few days, no change from normal. There are no fuel leaks, no fuel in oil (oil analysis confirmed this). Also no codes.

Thanks for the tip. I did disconnect the Can-Bus connector from the EZ and it was still there but not quite as bad. My next step is to totally disconnect the EZ, reinstall the original boost elbow, and see how it performs. It does run fine with the EZ in warm temps towing...I proved this out on my trip to FL over the Holidays..towed with no bumps or jerks in 70 degree temps. On return trip home to PA jerking started again when temps got below 40 degrees.
These injectors were advertised as "For the towing crowd", never mentioned there may be a drivability issue in colder temps.
Any comments from Don M.?

Yeah, I agree with the EZ and the cold weather. If you have the jumper on an aggressive setting, backing it sown slightly should also help.
What are your RPMs when towing? No chance of lugging correct?
Towing mileage can be tricky. If you are matted with a bone stock stick and matted with an aftermarket stick, you'll use more fuel every time. It all comes down to what type of towing you do and what your driving style is. If you can increase rpm slightly, does that help towing MPG??
I have Don M for quite some time and I know he'll stand behind his product if it's an injector issue. I highly doubt that it is though.

I have the jumper on the lowest setting. Towing at 70MPH=1975RPM...not lugging at all. I'm not really disappointed in the towing MPG getting 13-13.5 at 65-70MPG. Empty I can get 27MPG if I really baby it and 25MPG normal driving back and forth to work...19 miles one way. Bucking is not on a strong uphill pull but more so when the throttle is just backing off a pull. One thing I did notice with the F1's is about 200 degrees lower EGT pulling a 6% grade in OD with the 10000# camper in tow.
I don't have any contact info for Don M. I would just like to chat with him and get his opinion. Anyone have a phone number? Thanks...

Not that it's any comfort, but I've NEVER heard of a towing problem with a smaller F1 injector from Don.
This bucking doesn't seem to be injector related to me.
That said, it's possible that the pop pressure was mistakenly set too low (which would have the effect of substantially advancing timing), but that would be a rare case of F1 missing the mark in quality.
IIRC, Don sets pop around 280 bar. Or was it 300? I can never remember the important stuff, just the junk.

It's the EZ, trust me.
I've run all kinds of combos with stock injectors, DD2's and currently Mach 1.75. I've run the stock HX35, my current PDR HX35 with either a 12 or 14 cm housing. I've gone so far as changing out intake systems from stock to an AFE to my current Scotty. I've also towed anywhere from empty to 12,000 lbs with these combos.
All kinds of combos and it all boils down to the EZ's timing and cold weather, plain and simple.
Every combo I have run had the shudder/bucking/jerking/whatever you want to call it until I took the EZ out of the equation. This problem goes back years in the archives of this forum and it has come back as the timing in the EZ is to agressive with cold weather. Your having this problem with 45 degree weather, try it at -30 or more, trust me, I've been there a few times.

I was in Ohio in December. I did notice that mine was bucking just a little with the cruise on while towing. Not much, just when the cruise would add power on a slight grade. I'm running stock injectors but the Smarty was set to SW5. When this happened the temps were below 35*F.
