boost gauge flutters?

I just installed boost and pyro gauges in my 98 12v. The gauges are autometer z series gauges. I also put a boost elbow in also. anyway I get goin start to boost and it gets to about 22 psi and it starts to flutter, it doesn;t do it when the boost is low but the more it boosts the more flutter I get. its a about a 2-3 psi flutter at the most about 34 psi.

I don;t know why it does it, or if it is even a problem, any help will be helpful

Check for leaks and make sure if it is adjustable, check the boost elbow. Mine did that on the first set of autometer gauges I had. It actually had a leak internal on gauge.

I'll check for leaks tomorrow, but if there are not leaks then more than likely its in the gauge?

You need a snubber. I don't know why, but some gauges flutter, some don't. I had the same problem and the snubber fixed mine. http://www.dieselmanor.com/dm_products/fittings.asp It's the one called a Pressure Gauge Stabilizer.

I am having a similar problem with my Autometer guage (0-35lb). Mine starts to flutter when reaching 10-12lbs of boost. I have had these guages for almost 4 years. I recently bought a new guage (0-60lb) as I am adding a SilverBullet 62 very soon. I know mine is a 3rd gen but the post caught my eye as I am having the same problem. I can at least change my guage and see if the flutter goes away just by changing guage. I am expecting to use all of the existing cabling and boost tube and just change the guage.

This is pretty much a problem with only the 0-30psi guages because the spring is softer. With a 60 or 100psi guage, you won't have the problem.

There are plenty of ways to "snub" the boost signal without having to buy something more. Just a little RTV in the end of the plastic tubing, put a stickpin coated in oil in there, and let it cure. Then pull the pin out and you'll have a "snubbed" line due to the RTV restriction.

Or you can use WD-40 spray straws..

Or...

There are lots of ways to skin that cat.

Why cob it up when a snubber is less than $4 + shpg.??

The reason I was suspect it might be the guage is mine did not do this for years. Maybe it is the lighter spring that has just worn out? I will know soon enough. Some time this week I will change the guage.

If the flutter is close to the wastegate opening pressure (drive pressure and boost combo acting on the WG) it may as well be that the gauge is working OK and simply shows you what is happening. On one of the trucks where I had this complaint I installed a potentiometer to the WG actuator rod and used a multimeter while driving. The multimeter showed me that the boost gauge was going parallel to the wastegate movement. I installed a snubber into the wastegate line, very close to the diaphragm and this cured the problem.

Just my 2c

that makes sense
so say if take the snubber and install it in the waste gate line and it cures the problem then it is WG
if that doesn't work the it is more than likely the gauge
and then install the snubber in the gauge line
I checked tonite I don't have any leaks or kinked lines
