1998 12 valve that flutters when driven

This truck is such a nightmare first the clutch goes out then the all mighty of them all the big killer dowl pin took its toll too so now it flutters,no one seems to know where to begin started with the timing and that didnt fix it or help it no fuel leaks any where it does have the marine 370 injectors in it though but that could surely not have a thing to do with it and no fuel plate at all advanced as far forward as possible on the pump as well.I have had several of these trucks and this is the only one that flutters so i know that it is not from the plate being missing of the injectors cause there new from bosch and also it is starting to get hard to shift the gears at a stoplight with clucth pushed in just put a new southbend clutch in it before the dowl pin deal so it dont have 600 miles on everything any info would help me out a whole lot and please email it to dieselman24@hotmail.com i never use the toddj@rollaneet.org address again thanks alot for any help...

Actually, the 370's and a 160HP Pump are not a good combination. That wil cause flutter. (or surge)

As far as shifting. I have that problem too. It could be a worn shift fork, a bad throw out bearing, or your Clutch hydraulic's going out.

But I'm not a 12V guy... Yet

Merrick Cummings Jr

Re:1998 12 valve that flutters when driven

Well, it's a '98 5spd so it should be a 215 pump, no problems with the 370s there... When you say "flutter," do you mean it is stumbling as you increase rpms? Consistently at similar rpms? Have you tried putting a plate in it just for verification purposes?

Did this problem arise after the KDP faliure? When the KDP failed, what damage was done and which components were repaired/replaced?

Define flutters a little more.
Does it have a 4k gov. kit?
And was the gov lever adjusted ?
Of course with no plate that should not be the prob.

: Eddie : 8)

Re:1998 12 valve that flutters when driven

well it is kind of hard to explain flutter today i noticed it around the 1100-1900 rpm range it almost feels like you are pulling the plug wire off a smallblock and then putting it back on,and i do not have the gov kit yet but i think i will get it this week and have done nothing to the gov, just almost a dead miss but it goes away when under alot of higher rpms above 2000 i have put the plate back in too and it did not help i was thinking about maybe having the timing set up just about 3 degrees or so and see if that helps i just want it go away and to the lucky person out there that makes it go away i will buy you a steak dinner it is real anoying trying to drive it in town thanks todd (i never got to drive it much before the kdp but it did do it then too)

Re:1998 12 valve that flutters when driven

The flutter that you are describing sounds like the 370's. If you are going to add the 3000gsk, you may have to play around with the tensioning of the hold-down spring keepers.

Someone will be able to advise you on whether to loosen the keepers or tighten them once you give details of the stumble.
george

Re:1998 12 valve that flutters when driven

Well I had the same thing and I fixed mine. I will tell anybody how I did it. I took out the 370's , reinstalled the 215's. Maybe lost 40 hp and man does it run now. Yeah, with the 3K governor springs.

..Preston..
