Boost gauge fluttering....

Hi guys,

This past weekend while driving down the highway my my Autometer Sport Comp boost gauge needle started to flutter VERY rapidly and would vary about 3 psi. It would do this at any speed, any boost level and at any engine load but the higher the boost, the more violent the flutter. Engine rpm appears to have no effect on the frequency of the flutter - just boost pressure. I checked for any leaks and found none. I contacted Autometer's tech service and they suggested that I use regulated shop air to diagnose if the gauge was bad or if it was the pressure source. I checked the gauge as they instructed and I could not get it to flutter.

The truck appears to be running fine and is as strong as ever and is not making any strange valve train sounds or anything like that.

So, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what might be causing this?

I'd say if it does it no matter what load, rpm, boost level, etc.. and you don't hear any noises, it would be the gauge. Are your egt's the same?

My AM U/L 35# did that same flutter after to many PINNINGS
Replaced the gauge to a 60# and all is good. Same line and every thing so in my case it was the gauge.

Hey CTD,

when I drove out from michigan to washington my turbo gauge did that. I was towing, though. It flutters only when I'm towing, and not everytime, ethier. Is yours doing it consistently?

No, it is not doing it consistently at all. After hearing that the gauge has caused problems for others, I think that is the problem. It is 35 psi gauge but the needle does routinely pass the 35! The needle has never hit it's limit but it does go off the scale. Maybe this is stressing the gauge and causing some long term problems with it. Either way, Autometer did say they will warranty it if it has been determined that the gauge is bad and far as I can tell, it has gone South.

Thanks for the help guys.
