Bombing an auto safely
Bombing an auto safely
98 24v what i plan on doing is a 4in turbo back exhaust scotty II and 275's....will the stock auto be able to handle this? Also the truck has 33's on it with 3.54 gears. And if the tranny can handdle this how much more could it take before i have to start with building it up.
Re:Bombing and auto safely
If that is all you EVER want than the 275's, exhaust, and airbox will probably be ok... HINT GET GUAGES
If you want to be reselling 275's later on because you really want to have your motors potentual, then go ahead and start at the tranny. Remember it is cheaper to help a good tranny than to build a totally trashed one.
If you start with the tranny then you can do anything to the motor while knowing your tranny would hold it.
My $.02

I think you need to start backwards, don't think about what you can maybe get away with before the transmission starts to give up. First you never told us high many miles are on the truck? What was it used for before you got it? Are you the 2nd owner? 3rd owner? What was the maintanence history?
These are nice to know, but not essential. First you have a used auutomatic transmission, I would look and smell the fluid to check for obvious signs of abuse. These transmissions have a history of being week, and that is with stock hp ratings. I would think about addressing this problem first, It's not going to go away, and wishfull thinking don't work. How much can you afford to pay? This should determine what you do. A good transmission and all the related parts is going to run around 4 grand (a quick but close figure). To meany people add the power, cause it glamerous, cheaper, and you get to talk smack, but don't think about or budget money for a trany. Then they have two choices (1) leave the truck sit, till someone lends you the money to fix the trany. (2) Run up that credit card and get it fixed now, but pay through the noise for it. This probalem is not just limited to guys with the auto, so your not alone. The guys with the manuals have basicly the same probalem with the clutch. So be realistic, think about the big picture and what you would like to do. 3-4 hundred horses are not be hard to get, but they do you no good, if you cant use it. End the end you will do as you please, but atleast give it some thought. Good luck

Re:Bombing an auto safely
the truck is on it's second owner, it was bought at 32,000 miles a year ago. It now has 68,000 miles the tranny fluid was changed and i didn't see any problem or anything with it....i have thought about doing tranny stuff first but it quite expensive....i guess it's pay now or pay latter...i think what i will probly do is 4in exhaust and scotty II then, Shift kit, Valve body, and a 3 disc tourq converter. Then probly add all the guadges and finaly injectors...then eventualy a box...also somewhere in there i want to add a pusher pump.
Also what do gears cost for these things i belive it has a dana 70 in the rear, and i know it has a dana 60 in the front...the truck does do alittle towing around 4,000 a year.
