Black Smoke

I was wondering what I can do about the excesive amount of black smoke my truck is producing? I just put DD2's 75 hp injectors in it and I had a superchip on it but i took the chip off because it was way to much smoke. What is the deal how can I reduce the amount of smoke and still make more hp.

Why are you starting a new post? Didn't you post the same question yesterday?

Did you check your intercooler boots? Do you have a boost elbow installed to help the turbo create more boost?

My guess is you are just not getting enough boost to burn that extra amount of fuel you added. 75hp injectors on stock boost settings are gonna smoke no matter what you do.......you need to pump out some more boost and I can almost bet that will solve your problem.

I did check the boots on the intercooler and they looked fine. At an idle should I be producing boost or not. The prob is in take off and between the gears. Oh sorry for the same post I wasn't around yesterday to talk about problem.

Yeah a boost elbow will make a world of difference. But you will have to put the superchips back on ( I think they have a boost fooler, cuz if not than you'll throw codes for too much boost ). The reason it does it on take off and between gears is because of boost lag......once the turbo spools it burns the fuel and starts to clear up. But not having enough boost to clear it up, you are going to have smoke.

I see in your sig that you have a boost gauge? What kind of boost numbers are you seeing? 22psi roughly?

Ohhhh and no, you shouldn't be seeing any boost at idle. Your gauge should be on zero.

at the bottom of the forum page you can click to different pages you want to view. depending on how busy the day is, your thread could have carried over to page 2.

a power upgrade and a heavy foot with low-to-no boost = smoke. might have to learn how to drive again...it gets me by accident too at times!

Johan: 2001 3500 diesel 24 valve with turbo & "superchip??" 230K miles

Hey guy's. my truck produces a lot of smoke also & has little power. Before this forum I thought that I may need to change out my injectors but now i'm reading about some other posible causes. What would be the most logical steps for me to get this problem taken care of. Thx Johan

BTW. This is my 1st post. I'm in Phoenix AZ.

Get the code pulled, is it the original injection pump? Check the intercooler boots.

i would pressure test the intake system before i went and bought anything

to do this take a 4 inch pvc cap and drill and tap the end so you can put a regulater on it. Also get a piece of 4 inch rubber coupler so you can attach it to your turbo. Dont forget hose clamps. Take the intake of the front of the turbo and attach the tester. Pressurize to about 30 pounds and listin for air leaks or take a bottle with soapy water and spray it on the intercooler boots.

My truck was missing on the the intake bolts and the manifold and was losing alot of boost like that
