Hi I am doing some reserch for my trany rebuild and was wondering if someone could explan what the term "Billit",means other than, machined from a solid peice of steel. My local trany shop will sell me a "billit" shaft for $90. Yes he has built transmissions for racing etc. since the 1970s. So whats the diff between his $90 billit and everyone elses $600 billit? He didnt know! Is the steel a differnt type, tempered differnt, is it warrenty markup, or does the Emporer not have any clothes? Just wondering. TOM

 

steel quality and that sounds kinda weird. they cost more than that. i wouldnt get a supposed " billet input shaft" that is that cheap it throws up red flags

 

Do a search on it and call the trans shops.
The billet shaft are not all the same. some are brittle.

 

I thought it would be the steel type, but cant find any thing on the web that says its any certan grade of steel. I know there are many types of steel of varying propertys, some brittle some springy,soft, and hard. Why dosen't any of the supplyers say what it is? My local guy is someone Iv'e known for years he is a parts supplyer for a lot of the local trans shops and I trust him, the price he gave me was off the cuff and was probibly his cost. I am not aganst spending money for a superior product I just want to know what I am getting for it.

 

I know the Sonnax billet inputs are 300M steel.

$90????, a brand new stock input shaft costs more than that, I think its $175 for a new stock input shaft.

 

By definition, all input shafts are "billet". That simply means you start with a solid hunk of material and whittle away what you don't want.

For 90 bucks it is probably a hunk of 1018 CRS "billet"

In this case the emperor has clothes, to a point. If we were to talk about producing 100,000 of these shafts, we could probably produce them for that price out of 300M.......Then we would have to find a place to sell them.

 

That's what I was kinda wondering, too. It just sounds like a selling point. The term billet sounds fancy so they throw that in there to make it sound like it's better than a regular one. they're all billet, I'd hate to see a cast input shaft...of course, a forged one wouldn't be bad.
