BHAF question

I thinking about putting in a BHAF. Do most that are using them put in a heat shield? Or, do you really need one? Is anyone manufacturing a heat shield as of yet?

I never ran a heat shield for the time I was running a BHAF. I never knew anyone personally that had one either.

As far as I'm concerned, it's not really needed.

The stock box and filter will easily support 400 hp.
Why waste your money on something different if you really don't need it?

I like the stock box mod Infidel showed us a while back. I will do this when I get my turbo put on.

Agree 100%, In real world conditions hood down, 90f ambient temps., most of those Cold air intakes turn into hot air intakes that will drop hp. The upside to the BHAF is it will hold alot of dirt before becoming restrictive and in winter the warm under hood temps will help to keep higher IAT's and that in turn could give a little better mpg.

Because I HATE brick filters and their less than stellar sealing ability to the lid. LARGE gasket or hose clamp? My stock box leaked at the corners letting dirt in once I started sucking the filter minder down on new OEM filter elements. Its been on the shelf now for about 6 years.

I had a heat shield on my BHAF, made it from aluminum diamond plate and made my own pattern. Not that difficult but there is a pdf on here somewhere that you can print out as one of the posters had said. Can't say whether or not it's needed, it'll be kinda close to the turbo but don't think it was any closer than the oem filter box.

Definitely get an outwears for it though. This summer my outerwear was filthy beyond any cleaning and filter was due. $80 plus for filter and outerwears or spend the money on an Amsoil ea nanofibre filter for half the price, put OE box back in and new filter. Actually think that heat shield is kicking around in the shop somewhere or maybe it's in the scrap pile.

I've had a Scotty on my 3500 since they first came out in the late '90s.
By far the best air induction intake ever offered. Too bad he doesn't sell them for the older trucks anymore.
The Scotty was where I got my idea for the Son of Scotty stock box mod here> http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/ge...ck-airbox.html

Were you using the filter minder to tell you when to change filters or just looking at the filter?
There's not one person alive who can judge a restricted filter by just looking at it.
I've seen some of my tractor filters two inches deep in dust that flow fine.
Then again when we were dealing with ash from Mt St Helens the check filter lights would come on in less than an hour with a filter that still looked brand new.

Question on the BHAF. I went to NAPA and bought the 2790 filter. What came was a huge box with a NAPA part number 2790, inside was a Duralite air filter P/N 542790. No problem so far but this thing is HUGE! 10.5 inches long and 10.5 in diameter. Is this the filter you guys are using? When I lay it in the place the stocker came out of there is NO room to build a heat shield and the hood will barely clear it. Any advice will be appreciated. I am still looking for the template for the heat shield.

BHAF= HUGE

that sounds about right. i put short piece rubber gas line on my stock air box studs and the filter sets on the stud/hose.

no heat shield either. it does get black a little, the 3 piece exhaust manifold leaks a little bit at the joints.
