Exclamation Banks gauge problem

Can anyone tell me what would cause an EGT gauge to read from 0 to 1500 at idle or driving? Is the probe bad?

Also, should a truck show any boost at idle? What about at highway speeds. My brother's truck shows almost no boost on the freeway, but I can clearly hear the turbo.

Thanks for any info guys.

eather your boost line is broke or pinched, and EGTS going to 1500 at idle could be a probe or a gauge or a wire coming in contact with power

My first upgrade in 2003 was the complete Banks system that was then available for 2001 Cummins / Dodge . One of the things I did not like about it was the Banks gauges plugged into the back of the Banks Ottomind Box. On several occasions I could feel a decrease in performance, along with low boost and high egts. Other times the gauges did not appear to be reporting what you would expect in a given situation. Bottom line is I was never sure if the gauges were accurate, the box was acting up or there was some other problem.

Note - my Banks boost gauge was electric also.

As far as boost - I would expect to see none at idle, but around 5+ at freeway speeds on level ground without a load.

Good luck

Common pyro problem is a bad ground. Make sure you are ground the amp box to a decent ground.

Boost issue sounds like a crimped line or maybe over tightened fitting(s).

Thanks for the help guys. I think we're going to try the probe from my truck on this one (brother's 02) and see what happens from there. I hope that solves the problem.

gandrews, do your new gauges work better than yout Banks? BTW, I think my brother's system is like the one you had.

The gauges are in the pilar. So I don't think it will be too bad to remove them, or try to locate the problem. I have my pyro gauge (on my 03) over the rear-view mirror, and it wasn't too difficult.

I have more confidence in what they are reporting.

P.J. mentioned ground - Good point! A bad ground will cause all sorts of problems and symptoms.

As I recall the Banks system is grounded by a bolt at or near the intake heaters. You may want to double check that or run it directly to the negative post on the battery. Get a hold of the Banks install manual that came with the system to make sure of which wire is the ground.
