Aux. Reverse Lights
Aux. Reverse Lights - w/pics
Hey All,
I've been meaning to post this for a long time now - finally made some time. I did quite a bit of research/searching on here about how to and what to use for some aux. lighting in the back. I based my design off of a wiring diagram found on the forums here, and then modified it for my needs:
The first pic shows where i drew my power from and ran it thru an inline fuse.
The second pic shows where i tapped into the reverse circuit from the tranny.
The third pic shows my relay behind the column/knee panel with all wires running to and from it.
The fourth and fifth show how i mounted the lights on the rear of the truck under the bumper.

These pics show my switch and led indicator light mounting as well as a rear shot to show the view from behind. I used a 3-position on-off-on (below multi function) and a momentary push-button near the vent. The led illuminates any time the lights are illuminated.
Had some guys ask about the lights I used lately, so are some links:

They are Hobbs 3x5 halogens, wide flood pattern, 50W each. Part # 73761-11.
I picked them up from Gregg Distributors here in Calgary, they seem to keep them in stock on a regular basis.

HTH those that are interested.

The two 55 watts should be less than 20 amps so its a short somewhere. I would start where the road salt and grit does the most damage, the light and harness at the back. I've always had lights on the back for decoration or function and no matter how well I think I've heatshrinked, liquid taped or wrapped the connections, something always seems to go bad over the winter and into the summer. Then as soon as it gets cold and wet, it shorts..

After i ran mine off the reverse switch in the trans to a relay on my firewall a guy on here gave some great advice.
Mount a relay at the rear of the truck near the trailer brake connector. Pull power of the main power wire at the brake connector to the relay. Switch the relay off the purple/black back up light wire in the rear loom on the drivers side and run primary wire to your new back up lights. This way you don't need to run a ton of wires to the back of your truck and the factory wire will power the switch leg with no problem. Don't forget to run a ground.
Just a thought...

I have a set of http://www.whitenight.com/index.htm and they are great lights. Have a look and see if this is what you want. They do work great for connecting up the bumper pull trailer at night .
