Autometer FP Gauge

I recently installed autometer auto-light egt, boost, and fuel pressure gauges in the a-pillar. I noticed that the fuel pressure gauge is acting strange since the install. The gauge is the 15psi electric gauge and when it was first installed it would move around a little. Now when you let off the fuel driving it will jump down to 6psi then move back to 10psi, and is very erratic. I also noticed that the needle itself is moving left to right in the center and appears as if the shaft for the needle is warped.

If anyone else has this gauge does this sound right? I thought that I had read a thread that hooking the hose for the sender unit to the vp-44 would cause this type of problem. I couldn't find that thread, so I installed the stainless hose to the vp-44. I have since ordered the high flow banjo bolts to move the hose to the output side of the fuel filter.

I'd like to think that this is a higher quality gauge than this considering the price. Any thoughts or opinions?? The gauge has been in about 1 week and I just noticed this starting to happen. I was told that the autometer gauges had been having problems, but that the senders had been redesigned. The other two gauges are working perfectly.
Your supposed to put the sender on at least a 12" piece of hose that screws into the VP-44 test port. I have mine mounted on either a 12" or 18" grease gun hose. Works perfectly.

Re:Autometer FP Gauge

I used the auto meter stainless line...I think it was about 2 feet in length. I ran the line up to the sending unit that I attached to a bracket by the brake master cylinder. The reading on this gauge was never steady. I thought that it being only 15 psi could have been a reason. I also saw that the pulses from the vp44 could cause erratic readings in digital gauges.

Re:Autometer FP Gauge

I have a digital gauge and it's a steady 19.2 at idle and 16 at WOT. ;D I'd call Autometer and tell them what's going on. Don't tell them that it's on a diesel or they may not honor the warranty.

Re:Autometer FP Gauge

A friend of mine just installed an autometer fp gauge on his 2001 and he had the same problem that you are having. He had to send the gauge back to autometer and they sent him a new one. Like big blue said though, don't tell them it was on a diesel. I do know that autometer also recalled some of there fp gauges. You may just want to call them and ask about that. Hope this helps.

Re:Autometer FP Gauge

my autometer is montied on the test port on the pump and it moves around a lot it jumps between 12-15 at ideal. On the freeway it stays at 14-17 and at wot I can get it to 3 psi. This is my 2nd gauge in about 3 months the first gauge the needle stop was not in stalled so the gauge would not zero and would read everywhere. hope this helps

Re:Autometer FP Gauge

I took the truck to the speed shop where the gauge was bought and they confirmed that there is a problem with the gauge. I contacted autometer and they also said that the movement with the needle from left to right on the shaft is bad. I am getting the gauge replaced today. I plan on hooking it back up to the fuel filter when I get the high flow banjo bolts.

Re:Autometer FP Gauge

I noticed on Autometers webpage that they do not recommend using their electric or mechanical fuel pressure gauges for diesels. ???

MikeyB

Re:Autometer FP Gauge

It seems that there is a difference in sending units. I was told that the first gauge kit that I received had an older style sending unit that was giving autometer problems. ??? The new one I got this morning has a metal sending unit, where the last gauge had a composite style one. I think I am still going to wait for the high flow banjo bolts and install the stainless hose to the bottom of the fuel filter instead of directly to the vp44.

Thanks for all the replies, it's cool to have a forum to bounce the problems around and see what is really going on with these trucks.
