autometer egt gauge

About a week ago my egt gauge starting acting up. I noticed that it would only do it when I first started the truck up after it had been sitting in the sun. The gauge would bounce all over the place and when I would turn the blinker on it would move with the blinker. The last time that it happened I tapped on the gauge and it stopped and started working just fine. Most of the time the gauge does work just fine. I checked all of my wiring and nothing is loose. I thought that maybe I had a loose ground but I don't. I checked the wires where they connect to the probe and they are tight as well. Has anyone else had this problem. I am thinking that it is the gauge. Thanks for any help.

Re:autometer egt gauge

Just got back and found that if your pyrometer probe itself is loose it will react the same way , and the other would be the amplifier connections themselves (Stray wire strand) The loose probe made mine jump all over big time so check there first. There is a chart that is floating round somewhere that has a fixed temperature to ohm reading that is universal at 212* (Boiling point) and 0*F

Mine did the same thing a couple weeks ago. Lift pump turned out to be bad and I had to replace. Do you have a secondary guage to check pressure with? If so, it will probably show lift pump is dead.

Re:autometer egt gauge

I just finished installing my third autometer fuel pressure gauge and sending unit. Today I looked at the gauges and the egt gauge was all over the place. I saw it dive below 0 degrees. I tapped the piller gauge mount and it started to work. I checked and the probe is still tight, I am waiting to check the wires on the back of the gauge. I doubt that they are loose. Has anyone else seen this, and what fixed it.

Thanks.

Same thing happened to me. After I tapped on the gauge and it stopped it has not come back. Hope you figure out what is wrong with yours. If you do I would be interested to know what. Maybe I have the same problem. Thanks in advance.
Re:autometer egt gauge

This is only my personal opinion but I am getting rid of all my Autometer gauges. I find their reliability poor. The Autometer electronic fuel pressure gauge is junk. I am on my third sending unit in less than a year and it is dead. The only gauge I halfway trust is the boost gauge and it is mechanical.

Edward
Re:autometer egt gauge

Edward,
I'm starting to think you're right on the money. I have only had the gauges since the end of April. As I said I have had to replace the fuel pressure gauge three times. Autometer has been very cooperative, but what happens after the warranty is up?? I was steaming when I saw that the egt gauge is acting up. The really bad part about this is that these gauges cost me double the cost of the Dipricol gauges that I had originally thought about purchasing. It is going to be hard to rip out $700 worth of gauges and throw them away. I was hoping that someone had seen this problem and there was a fix. When the warranty is up I think that the gauges will be replaced one at a time.

If anyone has any feedback on the Dipricol gauges I would like to hear of any possible problems.

Re:autometer egt gauge

Went to the local truck repair place, bought ISSPRO guages and I only wish for better lighting. I could have avoid the lighting problems if I had purchase the high vis set.

Re:autometer egt gauge

From reading about the problems that people are having with these autometer gauges I think that I am going to start replacing mine one at a time as well. On my autometer egt gauge when i am letting the turbo cool down before I shut the truck off I have to tap on the gauge. I have found that if I do that it falls just a little bit to where it should be. Does anyone else have this problem.

Re:autometer egt gauge

I originally installed ISSPRO on my old '99, and they still work flawlessly now; never a problem. My new truck got ISSPRO EV guages for the enhanced visibility, and I love them. I have never had an ISSPRO guage fail yet, and between my brother (a '99 2500 CTD with ISSPRO egt and boost), my best friend (ISSPRO egt and boost), my son (owns my old '99), and myself (see sig), that's 9 guages without failure (six of which are currently 4 years old). I'll just stay with ISSPRO's.

GrandpasRam,
On your ISSPRO fuel gauge, since they do not offer an electric fuel pressure gauge, I assume you are running a fuel line in the cab? Were there any problems doing this? Did you use a braided line or plastic tubing?
Thanks,
Rob
