Do a search on transmissions. More info than you can ever possibly digest. I highly recommend calling up Stefan at DTT and talking to him about your concerns.

recently rebuilt trans might be able to get away with a valve body and a torque convertor from a reputable shop like DTT, Goerend's, etc. Older trans should be rebuilt before theyre upgraded. Id recommend a full build-up since Ive been told worn trans might not hold the power the VB and TC will push.
I really liked what I heard from Dave at Goerend's.. Id give him a call and check to see if he'll credit you a VB and TC towards a trans rebuild later down the line if the trans poops out with only his VB and TC in there.
Thats the achilles heel of the powertrain right there, best to get it done right and not worry later.

You have a new tranny. You will tow a little. You can do this. A tranny which has not been abused will go 100,000 miles or more. Dodge did not match the transmision to the capabilities of the CTD, so you need to keep this in mind when driving. Never develop full torque at engine RPM less than 1700. Below this RPM the transmission doesn't have enough line pressure to prevent slipping or to hold the converter in lockup. This forum contains many threads on upgrading the transmissions from the perspective of street racing, drag racing, heavy towing, etc. with an enhanced engine, because that is the direction most of the people here are interested in. With a stock engine and transmission you will be OK for a long time if you drive like your grandmother, plus keep the RPMs up.

Jim,if your truck is stock, the stock trans is more than enough.Just use N when idling whenever possible, and try not to lug it.A stock trans last 100K easily in most trucks so long as the engine power is stock.

My tranny just went south at 106,000 and signature600's is over 120,000 i believe and still going, so they can last over 100k at stock power and more than likely will if they don't tow often or get abused.

well to bad your fairly distance from me.. i have mastered the build up of these trannys from valve bodys to internal upgrades to rebuilding them tuned for specific natures... it took a lot of time sweat and bloody nuckles in the back yard garage of mine but not being a tranny builder at all and learning everything via book, people, and on here from varies folks it is an fairly easy task... if you buy the service manual for your tranny it breaks it down barny style almost...with the setup i have now on twin turbo's and other aftermarket parts i have my tranny fianlly dialed in and tuned for it... from upgraded kevlar internal frictions to shaved parts for more friction surface to bypass filter conversion to high preassure locking valve body to triple disk converter it puts more power to the ground then i have ever have. Plus the tranny pulls strong with the temps of the pre and post oil temps stay far below bad tempatures........i have spent less then 3 grand trial and error on these trannys.... you should try to do the work yourself.. it is fairly simple trust me...it is a lot easier then any tranny mechanic that has ever tryed to sell me an over priced rebuild on has told me... plus the knowledge comes to use for future references... because the exact same tranny comes in the dodges all the way to 2007 still except there called different slightly but are nearly identical but just minmal differences that a book cant show you to help you.......trust me if you plan on keeping the truck for a while especially towing with it.. learn all about these tranny's you can.. there a beast when you build them right there just parts that are weak on them that dodge never expected between cheap shift fingers to garbage filter setups.......shoot the main reason these tranny's give people so much problems from all my study and die out so fast is due to the poor performance of the stock filtering setup.....these tranny's filter setup is a setup that when the filter gets just a tiny bit of reduce flow from just from normal wear on the frictions and such it causes the line preassuire to drop and when the line preassure drops the tranny burns up shortly afterwards... since i did the filter conversion on mine i have yet to have this problem anymore.. the gauge shows the preassure on the tranny and at notice i can see if it drops and it a simple screw on filter where i dont have to take the cover off to replace the stock filter.....i have personally seen my line preassure drop as much as 12psi over a time frame of 20k miles from normal driving without towing and one trip that i did across country from north carolina to cally and back with a 5th wheel towing one of our cars and a wooden shed i seen it drop 8psi via filter clogging over the 7k miles....
