Am I on the right track?

Hello, long time listener----first time caller.

I'm read to do the usual stuff to my 12V 98, and just want to ask a couple of questions.

Here are my planned mods for it:

New torque converter
New valve body
Intake
Exhaust
Fuel plate
3K GSK
Guages

Questions-----

1) Any major differences between the Goerend 3 disc and ATS 5 Disc converters? Other than the number of discs? You guys seem to be proud of the Goerends, but I've never heard of them. I'm not looking to make a race truck or a sled puller. Simply a daily driver that has no problems tugging a 10,000 pound trailer over the hills.

2) Which fuel plate? A number 8 has been reccomended for a tow rig. Any thoughts? Does this sound like the right plate?

Are there any other concerns that I need to be aware of before I get involved here? This is my first diesel other than the wife's TDI Jetta, so I really don't have a clue yet. If it were a Toyota rock crawler, it'd be a different story.

Thanks for any advice or help,
Chad

1. There is going to be alot of opinions on Auto tranny stuff both companies are going to be good for you, I know guys that run DTT, Goerand and ATS all with good success at varying levels of power.

2. For towing Grind your own ten plate and slide it where you can control the EGT's while towing.

Be sure to get a Boost elbow for your turbo (around $20) to control the wastegate on the turbo to around 32 psi as to not overspeed the stock trubo.

Sounds like a good plan to me. I think that you would really like a good T/C. You will see most guys here recommend Goerend transmission stuff. Sounds like a lot of people have had great success and get good help form Goerend. Now I don't think ATS can offer quite the buddy buddy relationship that Goerend seems to leave with the guys here, but ATS make a great product. I love my T/C. I think they are the best on the market.

Dave is a great guy to deal with, and his products are top-notch. He did the tranny in my gasser 01, and it drives like a dream. Everyone I've talked that has had him do the work, or supply the parts, has been very pleased.

ATS supplies good products too, on a bigger scale of course. I'm not aware of pricing from them, but I'm sure it is all comparable.

As far as the plate goes, if a #8 has been recommended to you for towing, then go for it. A 10 is not going to fuel as much, and if the 8 is controllabe EGT wise, then you're already ahead of the game. Just don't go to a 0 or 100, would be a little toasty for you.
