Am I asking for problems?
Am I asking for problems?
I currently have a 99 3500 Quad 4x4. Installed Edge EZ last week along with Airraid and will be adding gauges this week or next.
I had to go pick-up my new 5th wheel this weekend and take my travel trailer to trade in. Prior to install, the truck was a dog. With EZ and airraid she pulled the old trailer like it wasn't back there. Of course I have no idea of temps I was running except for once the std temp gauge wasn't pushing the limits.
Problem 1: not quite enough power for new 5th wheel.
Problem 2: exhaust manifold cracked on way home, likely cracked before but very obvious now. Cracked all the way around from center.
Question1: Can I after replacing the exhaust manifold with likely HTT b/c I saw too many posts on how difficult to get the ATS together, add 275 injectors without any modifications or am I asking for additional problems with heat and/or trans?
Question2: Or should I just get exhaust manifold fixed and see how she pulls new 5th wheel b/c I prob. lost signficant power as it was cracked almost in half?
I hate to add new exhaust as new muffler and pipe back were just replaced for pretty penny this past summer. Had I known any better at that point, I would have went up to 4" at that point.
Thanks.
p.s. Next time I post I will have gauges, I wish I had them on trip up so as to know the temps, but I was running out of day light. So please don't flame me on that.

I will post even though we have talked about it.
the manifold repair will work ok if done correctly..they are not easy to weld though. Tap it for your temp sensor while its off.
You should at least put a shift kit in with 275's and your EZ to help your tranny stay healthy. SOunds like the SK is the way to go.
Exhaust would be a good Idea too to help lower EGT's but you should be ok with your stock system...maybe delete the muffler.

Thanks bud. Appreciate the input. I am guessing I will initially get the new HTT manifold and gauges in, then figure out next steps. Maybe the manifold leak was a loss of power that I will be ok without anything else added at this point.
Then add the injectors and shift kit? I really hate to start dumping in money heavy and just have to keep doing so by tearing things up, so I want to be careful on what I am adding as I am not at all knowledgeable about this stuff.
All help is much appreciated. You have been great.
Wish you lived around the corner, although I am betting your glad your not!!

Personally, I'd do a new valve body. The pressures are preset at the correct specs, the shift points are already calibrated, and the thing is assembled the right way. Not to mention it has a warranty if installed by a professional. Also, if you plan on upgrading the full tranny later on down the road, you can reuse the valvebody in the new tranny. I put a DTT valve body in mine and it held 371hp very well. So well in fact that I put 100+hp EDM's in it. I did untap the wire on the comp though.
ok i will take some of the heat off wbaker68. I am goin to be adding the van aaken v5 in a couple weeks and gauges maybe after christmas. ok so iam asking my self this i know how important it is to have the gauges and so forth to watch the egts but my truck is bone stock eccept for the box. would i be safe to run with out a egt gauge for awile? iam gettin the fp gauge this spring but wondering should i just wait on the egt gauge if its not really goin to be a big deal if iam not goin to make my truck a monster but a little bitty over stock?
I actually lowered my EGT's from 1250* with a scotty 2 and hole and a 4" straight pipe exhaust to 900* with the comp in EZ mode and the scotty/exhaust. So yes, you should be fine. BUT, I would STRONGLY suggest that you go ahead and get the EGT gauge as well just to make sure. I have no idea how the VA will affect your EGT's.

Why risk it..even if you just get EGT for now so you dont destroy a very pricey motor.
Also..Wbaker, I didnt even think that I bet you are loosing a good bit of boost from that crack...and I saw your post about keeping the trailer clean so I would bet you are loosing boost. It should be running pretty clean with your current set up

Yeah its kind of like the Grand Canyon so i am sure I am losing quite a bit. I ordered the HTT exhaust manifold yesterday and friend of mine is going to install it. When he saw it yesterday he said that is robbing me of lots of power right now, so hopefully I will be good to go. I am ordering a x-monitor today from one place or another, just trying to iron out prices on them. Found one for about 100 bucks less than most but not sure they are including everything needed, although the add seems to say they are.
We'll see, but in any event, I will have gauges for my next trip and have a better idea of how things are. Thanks all for help. I posted about torque specs on changing manifold out, does anyone have them for it and the turbo bolts??
Thanks.
