AFE or BHAF
I run the AFE, swapped the stocker for a K&N, picked up some turbo whine, swapped the K&N for an AFE and now conversations in the truck are about like conversations in a helicopter....who wants to talk to the wife anyhow
started with a K&N, but changed to a paper BHAF.......partly because of the whole "oiled filter" controversy, but mostly because the K&N made the turbo sound like it was in the glove compartment. Don't get me wrong, I like to hear the turbo, but life companion passengers, i.e. the wife, gets tired of talking over it. Of course the mitred stacks have been a topic on controversy for me as well
but at least they don't sound like nails on a chalkboard!!
But to answer your question, as I have not done oil analysis on either filters, I have no concrete evidence pro or con. I will say, I always noticed an oil film on the impeller blades, even after wiping it off periodically. Once th BHAF went in, I have not had any more oil film. Maybe this lends to the "sucking the oil from the filter" theory of those against K&N's...I don't know. But take it for what it's worth. I like the looks of the BHAF inder the hood better. I made a sock and stenciled a cummins logo on it....always gets comments because of its size and stature in this little bitty ol' truck. All in all, both are better than the stock airbox. I think ultimately, I will switch to a steel cased BHAF with outside ducting to take advantage of ALL the benefits of the filter.

Troublezilla,
I'll second the "crack" thing, but back to the subject, we ONLY sell the AFE Pro Guard 7 system as they are the only washable filter to flow the air but stop the dirt. You don't get quite as much air as a 4 layer gauze but it's close and you still keep the trash out. If you get the Stage II and Torque Tube it'll talk to you some but it flows as well as any system available. Call us if you have any questions etc.

I would like to get one of those big honkin' air filters, but I can't see it making much difference without fuel systems mods that are costly. Will just an air filter upgrade actually make much difference without any other mods like they advertise? I'm the skepticle one who has no idea how to spell skepticle.
4x4dually, I noticed absolutly no difference in power between the K&N and AFE, the stocker was shot, I was at Napa on the company card and K&N was the best there. I think K&N gets beat up here pretty bad because of the oil on the turbo thing, and I am sure someone will chime in and say they don't filter well, but here is my view....
been around racing much? see what sits on EVERY carburator? yep a K&N, dirt sucks, we all know that especially when you have tiny orifaces that a carb. does, Ithink you will be throwing money out the window by getting away from your PROPERLY MAINTAINED K&N, unless....you live in dust country as you just can't argue with surface area vs filter life, you have egt problems, in which case I would look at Infadel's pics he has a cheap fix there, or you just want to let everyone in town know you have a turbo. If you buy an afe they might offer you a discount on some of those two way motorcycle helmet radios....or they should!!
