AFC springs, a nessesity?
AFC springs, a nessesity?
Guys,
just what it asks, What do you all think about the AFC springs? ESPECIALLY on a 215 pump. I have read that they are not needed, and others suggest that they are a nessesity. I know that they are supposed to help on the low end, but i feel i have enough low end already for a stock turbo. So i see no need for it. I do see a benefit for the smaller pumps. But i do feel that if you need more fuel from a 215 pump there are also AFC grindings and lots of power mods in there. This leads me to question, for 35 bucks is an AFC spring kit really worth it? or just stick with stockers and grind or modify ur AFC...
Just want to see what others think..
Thanks guys!
Rick

I vote definitely for a 215 pump. Once you read up on the TST site that it takes over 40 psi to fully travel the AFC with stock spring on the 215, it makes sense to me. The AFC gets in the way of the fuel plate if you don't slide the AFC full forward with the stocker. Also adjustability with the stocker is on-off with the star wheel. How may guys have 40 psi at 1800 Rpm?? Not me as the wastegate is set for 36 right.. I like the spring as I have the medium spring installed and it makes adjustment easy for smoke control, but still have full power when I want it.

I can push 40 PSI with a blocked gate,
now with a stock turbo this is useless per say, cause i see that EGTS climb out of control per say really rapidly after bout 32 PSI. I have my afc full forward for the reason that it does seem snappy, So ur tellin me all it does is better control smoke? seems to me it aint worth the money...

The parts aren't that expensive..
To each his own, but with the stock spring and the AFC FFWD it would smoke pure black any time I needed to start out. I don't need that much fuel to get rolling and it would be 10X that much if I had bigger squirters.. I personally only want the fuel when I ask for it, not all the time. Why not use the full travel of the AFC to help meter fuel? Also, why not have it get out of the way fast so you can get on the fuel plate sooner? With the stocker spring in there I would bet that you are only using the top 2/3 of the plate anyway..
IF you aren't interested in it, why the poll??

I've jacked up the hp on a lot of 215s and have used the TST spring kit only twice because the owners were suckers and bought them.
Both times felt it was a waste of time and money. Just sliding the housing forward more than compensates for different springs.

plus the experience here helps me actually decide what Mods i can get and actually use. 35 bucks is almost 12 gallons of diesel..
i can better use that..Rick

Depends on what you want to do and what size injector you have.
Stock size injectors run a bit better with a light AFC spring, big injectors can actually drown the truck out with too much fuel using a light spring before the boost comes up. Excess smoke and bogging = YUK.
I run the heaviest spring I could find and a tight AFC, but have large injectors and a large pump.

I currently have those and want DDP4's eventually, what about a medium spring? With a full forward AFC and Plate, my truck bogs down, which is probably an indicator that my light spring just dont cut it...
Your thoughts Don?
Thanks in advance!
Rick
Don has good points.. It is a balance of what you have for other components too. I did not read close enough I guess.
But I still can't believe an arguement of $35...LOL Especially when you're talking about $800 injectors as a possible change..

I am in the same boat as Rick, it's not the money, but are the springs really a noticable improvement performace wise. I am happy with the setup I have now, as far as smoke is concerned. $35 will almost buy a case of shells...
