advincing the timing in a 24V

this guy i know told me the other day that the timing can be advanced mechanically on a 24valve. he just said to loosen the four bolts on the damper (i think that's what he said it was, it's on the front of the crankshaft) and turn it clockwise all the way, he said that they are slotted holes, and that's all that needs to be done.

so is this true or not, he's the same guy that started my other thread on here too "4 inch down pipe on an auto trans." he's been know to tell a few white lies in his time about some stupid things, but he knows a lot about cummins engines too.

i remember when he told me about the silencer ring, and that i should take it out, and he was right about that so we'll see .

thanks in advance

I'm pretty sure timing on a 24v has to done electronically. since the pump itself is controlled electronically

What he said will not work.... The timing can be altered but it takes more than just sliding the damper, besides the holes on the damper are NOT slotted

The vp timing is elecronically controlled but what it you were to pop the gear off and advance the pump like a 12v...I think that might be dumb question? They say no question is a stupid question but that does have it's limits.

I think that's exactly what he's talking about. On the common rail engines, the tone ring is mounted on the balancer. On the 98-02 engines, the tone ring is mounted to the crankshaft, within the crankcase. It would be difficult to move that one.

The 24 valve motors use either a crank sensor or a cam sensor to base the timing from. It depends on the year.
