Question Adding subwoofer

I want to add a subwoofer to my stock dodge stereo, Is this possible? If it is, how do I do it? I'm guessing I will need a cross over, amp. and a sub, but is there anything else I would need to do this? I don't think the stock stereo's have a pre amp. out so how do you get around this? The reason I want to use the stock stereo is I have a lot of old cassettes that we as a family still listen too, so I want to have a cd/cass. player in the truck. Plus I think guys are less likely to break into your truck to rip off a factory stereo. Thanks.

If your dead set on using the stock head unit, your gonna have to buy a box that hooks up to your headunit and converts it to RCA's. Any car audio place will know what I'm talking about. After that, all you'll need are the RCA cables, power and ground cables for the amp, the sub, sub box, and an amp. A single 10" sub will probably suffice for what your wanting.

get an amp with built in "hi level" or speaker level inputs and a crossover. then all you ned to do is tap into your rear speaker lines to hook up

or you can do like I did get an adaptor harness to install an aftermarket radio and on that goes into the stock radio ( a stereo shop should have both)

then wire em together and do all your taping in off the new little harness you made up and you don't have to cut any factory wires

into truck harness

into radio harness

an amp like this will do the job and the smart engage circuit senses when the stereo turns on and powers up, thus no need for a remote turn on wire

So let me make sure I'm getting this right dodge ram. You get the two harnesses and connect them together, and splice into the rear speaker outputs from the factory stereo to get the signal for the sub amp. Then you run those rear speaker outputs to the amp like the one you recommend. I guess that amp is made to take speaker inputs? If thats the case, does the crossover in the amp seperate the low frequency notes out for the sub to play only those low notes? What difference did adding a sub to your stereo make to the sound quality? It sounds like you've got the stereo set up I'm looking for in my truck. What size sub do you have and where did you mount it? I want to replace my stock door and rear speakers, What did you do with those in your truck. I have the "A" pillar three gauge mount with the tweeter in my truck so I'll probably keep my stock tweeters. What did you do with yours? Thanks for the info.

yeah you understand it pretty much right .............I have fully replaced every part od my stock stereo, but we did a setup like you want in my buddies chevy and it worked well ..........

actually you can tap off the front speaker leads if you want too , recomended if you fade mostly to the front ........

I like the mtx mono amps for that kinda setup cause they take speaker level inputs, have a built in crossover, have smart turn on (it senses when the stereo is on , and turns on automatically), and they can use a dash mounted volume contro for the sub ...............kind of an all in one package

stock speakers are easily replace with some aftermarket coax's 6.5" speakers front and rear ......you'll need to make some mounting plates for the front as the front stock speakers are 6x9's

you may be suprised how well it sounds with the sub added and keep the stock speakers .......

Thanks for the info. Have you ever heard of anything like a frequency blocker for speakers? I did a search for sub woofers and I think I remember seeing guy's talk about using something like this to block out frequencies. If they make such a thing, I would like to use it for my tweeters so they only play the high notes. What do you think?

before i got a new head unit, i put an amp under the drivers seat and tapped into my rear speaker wires and connected them to the high input on the amp. To make the amp turn on with the key, i tapped into the fuse box. when i found a fuse that was dead with the key off and powered with the key on, i pulled the fuse, put the stripped end of the wire into the clip, and pushed the fuse back into place. Most head units come with a blue wire called the "remote" or "remote antenna" that will do the same thing. I bought a sub woofer box from MTX that holds to 10" woofers and makes it look like it came with the truck from the factory. It is a very nice box and absolutly worth what it costs.

Hey dodgeram. Do you think a kicker solo baric S8L7 sub will work well with a mtx audio thunder 251D sub? The reason I ask is I saw a write up from a guy who used an mtx 251D sub in a box that he mounted inside the center front seat in his quad cab. It looks like the JL audio stealth box, but for a lot less money and it's more comfortable to sit on. I'm hoping to use this set up in my truck. Any ideas? Thanks.

Do you have a link for this write up? I've been thinking about doing the same thing.

JL audio makes a Stealth box that goes underneath the center front seat. I was just going to make my own for when I get my sub. I dont know if theirs is specific for their sub or not, shouldnt be. Go to a stereo shop and they should have specs and pics of it. Then you can get an idea if you are building your own.

Woops sorry, read that thread, that JL stealth box is alot of money . I like his idea for his custom box but only 0.35 cu ft.? I need at least 1.5 for my sub that I am putting in. Oh well, back to the drawing board I guess.
