Accessories question..... Winches ??

Anyone have a Ramsey Winch ??

How do you like it ?? I'm looking at a Ramsey REP 8.5e Winch, which has a 8500 single line pull rating, and was wondering if you might have any insight into the REP line of winches.

I have the RE 12000, and had the REP8000, I also have the WARN m8000 and have had the 8274, so here ya go..the re series is easily the strongest most heavy duty over built winch I have ever seen, and that comes at the cost of speed, the rep series is not even close to the same league for brute strength, but for the money they are a good deal, if you stick your dodge real good or uphill you are looking at two blockin'. they pull fast are light priced right all that, if you are going to use your winch hard or often you might want to look bigger or to the re series, if it is just intermittent use or pulling shrubs boat launches and you don't bury the truck in 5 feet of goo every weekend the rep will keep you pleased if you do get stuck real good be nice to it it will get you out but remember line stcking kills winch torque so I always reccomend 2 part pulls with small winch/big stuck combos, hope this helps,
GREG

General rule of thumb is 1 1/2 times the weight of the vehicle it's being mounted on.

Your truck probably weighs in the neighborhood of 6-8K, so an 8K winch isn't enough.

I have a 12K on mine and wish I would have gone with the 16.5K.

Sure, you can throw a ****** block on there doubling it's capacity, but that will cut your line speed in half, and double the overheat time.

Also have to remember that winch is only 8.5K on the first cable layer, the 2nd layer will be around 7K, third layer around 5.5K, 4th layer 4K.
You'll only have 2 useful layers if your winching yourself out, that's a lot of winching a couple feet, finding a new anchor point, couple more feet, another anchor, and so on.

What about rolling weight, such as pulling a Ram 3500 up onto a trailer? Would an 8500 be overkill?
I'm thinking of a winch for my trailer, and I figure the heaviest thing I'd use it for, single-line, would be pulling a truck, or maybe an 8K tractor onto the trailer.
I don't really want to get something too big, because it will likely only get used when I actually have a broke truck or tractor that needs to be put on the trailer.
It *might* get used on the truck sometime, but that would only be in a special situation, perhaps in the snow, etc. I figure then I'd use a ****** block to make it easier to pull something that is stuck. I plan to use a receiver mounting on whatever winch I get, so I could transfer it to the truck if I ever thought I'd need it.

Thanks,
Chris

Just remember an 8000 winch on the last wrap only pulls about 4000 lbs. So it would stop with the 3500 Ram on the ramps. Use a ****** block and get the winch on the 1st or 2nd wrap and it will pull the truck on.
I have small 4500 winch on my trailer and I always have to run the ****** block to pull even a small car on.

Check your pm!!

I was thinking rolling weight would be nothing, average person can push a disabled car for a short distance.

Uphill onto a trailer though.

I was thinking a winch made for a trailer, like this

http://www.warn.com/works/dcwinches/DC4700.shtml

But, if you plan on moving it to the truck for light recovery use, then the 8500 would probably be ok, as long as you're just pulling out small cars from snow banks.

See what I mean by 1st or 5th wrap?
Pull by layer/Lbs(Kgs.)
1/4700(2130)
2/3980(1800)
3/3450(1560)
4/3041(1380)
5/2720(1230)
You pull out 18 ft. of cable your still on the 5th warp and only can pull 2720 lbs. Use ****** block and pull out 36 ft. cable and are on the 2nd wrap and can pull 3980 lbs.

Get the biggest winch you can, you'll never regret having too much!

Yup.
I wish I would have shelled out a few extra bucks and got the 16.5.

Still, my 12K is plenty, but always nice to have more.

I pulled my jeep onto a flatbed trailer with the 2500 warn on my 4 wheeler, that is no big deal, but if you are looking for getting unstuck you either go big or pack ****** blocks and a lunch. BTW my re 12000 has a stall rating of 24,000 lbs! I have blown the bead off of a tire pulling over a rock and the old girl keeps pullin' but nothing beats the 8274...blazing speed good pull power, heck you can 2block faster then the re series.

Yup, I agree on the 8274 for speed......I have yet to see ANY winch that pulls faster (you guys can keep your high speed super electronic mega $$$ crazy winches).......I have one that works awesome on the front of my Jeep but it would have no place on the front of a 3500 CTD........The RE12000 is definately a brute!!......I have seen them consistently pull more than what they are rated for over the years but they are way too slow for self recovery of lighter vehicles. It would be a great winch on the front of a CTD if you are not in a hurry!.......The RE12000 will definately out pull the Warn M12000 but you can't beat the M for line speed......no load and loaded line speed id easily 2-3 times faster.

IH8, stay away from a 8500 lb winch if you plan on using it for recovery.....it will simply not be strong enough for a CTD.........You can use an itty bitty winch if all you are doing is pulling a vehicle onto a trailer.........heck, I can barely control my Jeep if I use the 8274 to pull it onto the trailer!......I usually have to just bump the winch remote switch on and off slowly to get the tires between the trailer fenders!

I didn't see the 8274 on the Warn site. What am I missing, it this an older model, or something they don't advertise?

Thanks,
Chris

It's there...8274-50 is the current model..

It's also very pricy... Not one you "settle on"...

For a trailer winch, even a 6k will do ya fine. In fact, that's what we used to get my truck onto a trailer last week!

For the truck itself.. 12k or bigger.

Upwards of $1,000 bucks.

You can get a 12K for that price.

Here's a good sampling of what price's you'll expect to find.

http://www.winchdepot.com/winches.asp

When I got mine I just did a search on Yahoo then started comparing prices, shipping, etc, till I found the cheapest but from somewhere that seemed reliable.
That link wasn't the cheapest, but I can't remember where I got mine, just that it was buried about 10 pages down in the search.

The 8274 is so fast you can get hurt when feeding cable onto a full drum, it sucks in cable like a top fuel dragster.....compared to my re 12000
